., N '" '" Q. '" 1;; Mftch Mayes ClJ > ::; '" ~ w Z W ...J U ~ U Does the Open Desert by Alice Rhea . Ph otos b y Bill Crawfo rd FOUR CORNE RS, CA L ., Apr. 29 , 197 3 - Spectato rs in t he pits we re surprised today to ' see Mitch Mayes (Hus) co me flyi ng through w ith a lo ng lead ove r second place Tom Broo ks (D KW) . Everybody is pretty used to seeing T ommy win . Mos t folks just assume d that Brooks wo uld catch Mayes on the second loop of th e Hare and H ound. Bu t the sec o nd loop was th e fast one, and, although Brooks did ca tc h Mayes d aydreamin g, he got off attemp ting to pass. So spectato rs at th e finish lin e were again su rprised wh en Mayes came in first ove rall. Maye s said Brooks went flying by him b ut th at he wasn't on his bike. S o w e w aited, wondering wh ether T om h ad be en hurt in th e fall. Bu t n o , h e was O K, al th o ugh a littl e ra ttled, an d saunter ed in to take secon d overall and first 125 Ex perts. Mar k Ade n t's fa ther, no t in g th at Broo ks is one of the fastest ri ders aroun d, told Mark to get righ t behind T om an d do every th ing he did. Mar k foll owed instructi on s to th e letter, even ge tting off in t he sam e sp ot where T om h ad d ropped it! Mark go t off a little h arder than Brooks, giving up three places in th e fall. Mark h ad b een running third, b u t . dropped b ack to six th giving first 25 0 Exp er ts to J im Fishb ack (CZ) an d se tting for second in cla ss and six th overall. The first lo op really wa sn't bi g b ike co un try, bei ng a lit tle more than half taken up with tight turns an d with a rock hill simila r to th e one presented by Desert Barons las t week, but none of the fr on t run ners had probl ems with th e hill. The second lo o p was ide al big bike coun try wi th san dwash es that we re like free ways; ride as fast as you r bike woul d go ne ver see a ripple. Then flat deser t covered wi th fl owers an d even the ~' ro ugh , to ugh desert racer who would never be expec te d to n otice suc h things . were ta lking abo u t the " beautiful second lo op." This was t he big-bike loop. as opposed to the hilly. rocky small bike loop. Mayes led th e race fro m th e start to finis h wi th Br ooks in for seco nd an d Jim Fishback movin g up fro m fo u rth pl ace through th e pits to th ird overall an d first 25 0 by the fini sh . J ack Kn eb el gained fr om six th to fourth, wi th A.C . Ba kken (Hus) hanging in the re for fif th all th e way aro un d. Sh aron Rosen auer, riding a new Rickman Zunn dap , is haivin g pro blems fm id ing girls to ra ce again st and las t week sh e zeroed in on Bob Hayes, bea tin g him b y one p osition. Again th is week th ey had th eir own race, joine d this time (we think) by No. 16 0c Mike - Holbrook. The three had a re al dice going , tradin g o ff leads every few y ar ds . Bob took the win today on his Monark wi th Sharon in fo r secon d and first girl and H olh roo k bringing up the rear . Sh ar on , co vered with fork oil, said , "J ust wait till I ge t my forks fixed," to wh ich ' Boh co un te red, "Wait ' til I get m y n ew gearing." Holb rook was unavailable fo r co mme nt. Co rd is Brooks (DKW) go t zapped by abou t six riders on the second loo p. Cordis - was riding wide o pe n, b ut th e second loop wa s big bike co un t ry and he en de d up 14th ove ra ll, still first T rail Expert, but n ot as hi gh in overall standings a s h e is used to finishin g. Agai n to day , Cordis' had a fla t rear tir e. Mitch Mayes got an Open Expert win in the desert. Larry Roeseler (Baja) and Bru ce Ogilvie (also Baja) took second and third. Chuck Cartledge (H od) too k fo urth T rail Exp ert an d ask ed if anybody had seen hi s brother. Mik e sh o we d up a few minutes lat er fo r fif th , pursued by (are you ready fo r this?) Larry R oeseler's fa ther, Earl! When asked wh at he wa s d oin g th ere Earl replied, "Well , eve ry body h as to be so me where." T hat ma kes good sens e. Like all' good Am ateurs, Geni o Beattie transferred fr om th e N ovice ranks and p romptly dropped into oblivion. T oday Genio is back riding h is T racy turned 25 0 Hus ky in for firs t Amateur right ahead of fellow club memb er Art Knapp. Typical ly, Art wa s delighted to have a friend b eat him, and p ull ed in b ehind Genio grin n ing fro m ear-to-ear in congrat ulatio ns. T h e T rail Novices missed th e bes t part of the rac e , go ing j us t one lo op. That second lo op wa s really prett y. Stan Ude ll go t hi s last transfer , riding his Kaw asaki in fo r first with Dave Dixon taking second an d Mark Bames (Yam ) getting thi rd. I do h ope n ob ody refrained from signing up aft er ge tt ing a loo k at th at co bby , cross-gr ain st artin g are a, be cause if the y did they missed what most riders said was han ou tta sight race."
