T X., A p r. :?, 197 3 - T he Fort H o od Dirt Riders h osted th e first IS DT two-day trials at Killeen , T exas on the 3 1st o f March and th e 1st of April. The tw o hundred and eigh te e n riders were greeted b y cle ar sk ies and coo l temperat u res. The event was AMA and F1M san ctioned. Mr. Russ March was in attendance on Saturday, watchin g and taking not of an y problems en co un tered for future referen ce ~ Oth er AMA officials p re sent were J im Cagle, Director of Amateur A ctivities, "Mr. Berkshire ," Al Eames, and District Manager Ted Kelderman. _ R egio n al Manager Tom Clark was e n te re d as one of th e Amhersr Me adowlarks. All riders were required to repo rt t o the im po u nd a re a prior to 7 :00 P.M. on Friday for inspection , marking of major parts w ith pain t, a nd a DB (so u nd) test. T he m o t o rcy cles we re then im pou n de d in an ar e a- surrounded b y tw o rows of co ncer tin a (b a rbed ) wir e and gua rde d by sen tri es. The te rrain was varied with hills, rolling me ad owland, wooded sections, t ank trails, and a lib e ral sprin kling of w ate r cro ssings and mud holes. T he rid er s soon learned ab out th e mud holes on a tank trai l. They're bottomless ! Th e fir st tw o special tests were an acceleration an d DB check lo cated ab out a third of th e way th ro ug h the first loop. The riders didn 't h ave tim e to stri ng out and the timin g trap was undermanned and as a re su lt some o f the later rid ers lo st up to fif teen m in utes waitin g for th eir tum to go through the test . T o co mpensate, poin ts lo st at the n ext ch eck we re n o t co un ted. One difficulty en counter ed early in the co u rse was a clim b up th e we st face of Castle Mountain. Though o n ly a few hund red feet h igh , th e trail had lo o se ro cks a nd riders h ad to jum p a I Y, foot led ge abou t fi ft e en fee t fro m th e top. Many riders wer e caugh t high ce n te r o n the ledge an d h ad to b ack off and tr y again. O ne " E " for effor t and a silver wen t to Carl Cra nke - as he rod e m os t of the race with only h is fr ont b ra ke. The rear brake ca m shaf t sh eared at th e sp line betw een chec ks I and 2 o n Saturday. Cran ke was aboard o ne of two 250cc KTM/ Pen tons in the coun try and no --- spares we re availa ble. Carl also turn ed in second fast est ti me in the 25 0 class in th e last speed test on Sunday. The third sp ecial test on Saturday was a 6-mile speed test up wh at appeared to h ave been an o ld fire ro ad , m uch of which was loose gra vel an d ro ck. Mr. March w as joh n ny-o n.the-spot t o e n su re there was no repeat o f the m orning's p roblem. A s lon g as we were th e re no ride r lo st mo re than 4 5 seconds. T here w as quite a lot o f talk an d at least one offic ial p rotest fil ed Saturday ni ght over rid ers receivin g o u tside assistance and/ or parts. Th e protest was fil ed aga i nst three Rokon team member s. It se ems th eir pi t cre w w a s see n lubin g ch ains at o ne of th e fuel stops. It also seems that some on e en tered o ne Monark more than was nee d ed and strip ped i t afte r ch ec k one on Saturd ay for spares. The bi ke was la te r impo unded off a truck.
