Unfortunately om itted during t he paste-up of last week's story on Jim Po meroy's fantastic f inish in the Spanish Grand Pr ix was the fact that J im and Hans Maisch were actually t ied for f irst overall on points. J im won the first 45-minute moto (Another first for Amerieans , actually w inn ing a GP moto o utright) and too k fourth in the second one. Maisch had a second and third . Accord ing to FIM rules, the of ficials had to go to t he clock to decide the ove rall winner since' Pomeroy and Maisch were tied on points. Hans got the advan tage by not very ma ny 's e c o n d s . Spea king non-tech n ica lly , Pom eroy t ied fo r first overa ll in his f irst Wor ld Ch ampionsh ip Gra nd Prix and is the leade r in po ints cou nt ing towa rd t h e 250 Wo rld Champ ionsh ip in motocross. It is actually a pretty useful reference book which even has some new material in it . We particularly like their short synopsis descriptions of all the '73 scooters. To our m ind, they capture what t he bike is all about in a few sentences. Maybe that's because we agreed w ith most of their comments. (Look out for people who agree on something telling each other how smart they are !) They could have th rown in a few more p ictures of t hose spiffy ladies that are a lways wander ing around their covers, though ...for di rty old men like Papa. Heh, heh . SABADELL , SPAIN , Apr. 12, 1973 American Bultaco rider Jim Pomeroy h as been declared the winner of the first World Championship motocross Grand Prix h e has ever entered. A retabulation of the points according to the 197 3 Fll\l m otocross scoring system gave Jim not on ly the- lead in the 250 World Championship, as already re ported, but mad e him the overall winner of the opening Grand Prix of the' 73 season. Motocross fans will reme mber that im and Han s Maisch had tied on p o in ts with five apiece for the tw o 45-minute m otos un der th e tra ditional one for firs t, two fo r second sco ring system used in in ternatio nal motocross. Po in ts fo r ove ra ll w o rld stan dings are awa rde d on the b asis of 15 fo r firs t, 12 for second , 10 fo r thir d, 8 for fourth an d so o n . Since th e German an d th e American ti ed o n p o ints, the w er e Spanish-sanctioni ng cl ub had gone to th e clock an d Maisch h ad the lo west e lapsed tim e . Tech nically, thi s gave him th e Gra nd Prix victory even th ou gh Pomero y le d in world po int standings. Jim 's 23 points with a fir st an d fourth be a t Han s' second and third total of 22 . Pomero y is the winner of the Span ish 25 0 Grand Prix. A feat t hat most Ame rican an d n earl y all European "experts" predi cted to be a ye ar o r tw o away has been ac complished b y Jim Pomeroy, a rid er wh o has been relatively little touted by an ybody ex ce pt, of co urse , Bultaco and , we roudl no te, thi s p ub lica tio n . Additional information indicat es tha Jim got the lead on the first lap of the first m o t o, af ter breaking from th e gate in third, and was never headed in the 4 mi nutes plu s two laps of racing. Joel Robert, reigning World Champ , worke his wa y up to fifth be fore pulling of the track. Jim had pulled ou t a 12 second le ad when his pit crew, Sr. F.X. Bulto himself, told him to thro t tle back giving hi m the victory by a six second ma rgin . Jim fell in the secon d mota fai rly h ard, restar ted , and wor ke d his way back u p to fourth at the finis h.
