Some rider co m p lai n ts were st ronger , in cl uding those of th e rid er wh ose sto ck 250 Kawasaki had been fail ed a t a cl aimed 93 dB while 250 Hondas with what we re practically op en m egaphones were a llowed to p ass. M or e se rio u s w ere the scoring problems th at turned up. Fo r reas ons th e , cl u b mem bers have st ill n ot unrave led , riders ca me in very late t o c hec k No. 6 o n Saturday, but so cons isten tly th at it was clear somethin g b ad was wrong. The remedy was to average out th e lat en ess and try' to co m p ensa te fo r th e time lo st (perha p s by being held to o long a t chec k N o. 5 , wher e every one seemed very early) b y g iv i n g every one 10 m inutes, thus r est or ing man y m ed als that would otherwise have been lo st. By all owing the fir st dozen or so riders t o co nti n ue on their schedul e and holding all su cceedi ng rid er s for an ex t ra hour an d nine minutes a t th e c hec k a nd gas st op so me se m b lance o f order was m ai ntained, t houg h as with t he extra ten m inut es o n Saturday t here m ay have b een an adv an tage t o so me ride rs in getting the extra time after th e preceedin g t ough section. " T he re were p robabl y m ore go ld m edals th an t he re sh oul d h ave been," says Jim Cagle. Rider s themselves were m or e upse t by sp ecial t es t scores . Apparently the p eople co m p u ting the speci al t ests were fed s ome wrong information and co m p o un d ed the problems by faulty c om p u t atio n . One rider 's time on the cross country t est would have had him averaging 126 mph, fo r example. Jim Cagle and AMA Regi on al Man ager T om Clark sp ent so m e time helping clea r up these errors and Cagle had been assured b y club Se cretary John Hi gginbotham that th e sco rers w ould be able t o straighten every th ing out. It is easy to b e cri tic al when an even t h as th ese problems, an d it is al ways d is appointin g t o find a n even t so p leas an t to ride d ogged b y scoring diffi culties , particularl y wh en these sc o res will m ean so much to riders eager f o r th e I S DT. " It 's very h ar d to p u t o n a tw o d ay even t with p eople wh o are n o t th at ex perienced a t this type o f event, " sa ys Ca gle . Hit's a lea rning process f or th em, a n d I thin k, consid eri n g that, we've had two .very good eve n ts so far." (He was referring t o th e earlier Fort Ho od qualifi er. ) Of co urse the ultim ate goal of these qualifiers is the ISD T. How many people will make it, and wha t d o these qualifiers m ean fo r th e Am erican ISDT effo rt? Cagle is blunt: " Frankly , o u r go al is to win the Six Days . I really think we have a go od chance of winning if we pu t this thing t oge th er properly ." He points o u t th at this is th e first time we hav e ever had an organize d selec tio n process fo r th e ISDT, a nd he feel s that we will h ave th e bes t t eam we have eve r fielded. A lot will depend on ex actly h ow many pl ace s th e U.S. gets . Th e FIM says the h ost country can field fi fty percent more riders than th e largest for eign en try, which typicall y m ean s aro u nd fi ft y . But Bob Hicks is alread y sa ying the AMA is talking abou t being limited b y th e FIM t o as few as thirty rid ers, wh ich o f ,co urse would lea ve practi cal ly n o chance fo r anyone but fa ctory people . FlM rules limit total e ntry to 3 0 0 , and the AMA has no entries at all yet (deadline is Jul y 1), so all this rem"!ns up in th e air . Even with forty -fiv e en tries , the AMA reports th at fourteen manufacturers have exp ressed interest in sponsoring a team, o f which only six ~r so will actually get to co mp et e. This me ans that it is very p os sibl e for manufacturers' te ams t o fill t h e entire en t ry if they d o well enou gh in the qualifiers .
