All is nDW well wi th the Yamaha factory rider an d afte r a third in last we ek 's ro ad race National at Dallas. th e cu rre n t point leader in the National scen e put o n a terrific display o f riding and co nvinci ngly won th e main even t o n the very fast San J os e half-mile . T his ra ce will be th e p relude to the up coming National in May and if h e can perform as well then . the lik eabl e young speedst er will be a shoo-in for that ra ce. J im Rice won the fi rs t heat in convincing fashion that is so typical o f th is BSA rider. Jim will sw itch to a Harley -Davidson fo r the National , Of the four heats, the first was the easiest with TDm Horton beating out Ron Powell for second, In the second h eat. Gary SCDtt and Don Castro repea ted their R ace of Champions duel. Scott was th e winner over the new Yamaha T eam rider. Ch uck Palmgren brought the A ll American Racers Yamaha in for the third heat win over Mert Lawwill and T e rry Dorsch, wliile Roberts had little trouble winning the four th over T Dm Rockwood and Eddie Wirth. In the Expert Main, it wa s Roberts all the way with SCDtt ke eping within distan ce o nly through the first turn . Roberts turned fast, co nsiste n t times all through the 15 laps and was a three second winner with Scott and Cas tro once again _p erforming their duel. At diffe rent points Scott would p ull away Dr Castro drop b ack , but about every three lap s the distance would close and bring the fans to their feet. Castro, a lo cal favorite h ad pulled a good shot on Scott in the heat but got n ip ped at the finish line. T he fans were a little unhappy , b u t the racing was the greatest and they we re willing to .wait for the m ain and that battle. In the J unior class John Gen n ai and Rick Hocking did their usual and ra ced h ead to h ead . Gennai took a slight lead with a win h ere to day with Hocking taking second. While Gennai was ne ver head ed in the 10 lap Main. Hocking gave it his all on th e la st lap by pushing his Schwenna jYamah a su pe r deep in th final tum o nly t o c om e out sidewise an lose ground. Lots o f action befor e th e ra ce m ad it in te res ti n g t o o , as both riders had th eir troubles. -On Hocking's first time tri al lap, he inad ve rten tly bro ke off a sp ark p lug w ith his leg (HUH....E D) . whil e Genn ai had a sligh t crack in his frame that h ad t o be welded up just before the heat. Fini shing third w as veteran Ivan Shige masa. Bruce Hanlon mad e a believer ou t of sk eptics with a Yamaha twin and a very convinc ing win in the Novice ei gh t lap per afte r champ Alex Jorgensen Bruce Han lon was t he Novice win ner. seized h is Kawasaki. Bill Oliver and Nick Nazzisi made the ra ce in the Mai n once Jorgensen was gone with Oli ver taking second from Nazzisi close to the end. Both rode ·the new 350 Bult aco s very we ll.
