T he 125 Am /Ex. clas s saw T om Boyette (Suz), p ass a Penton, to take the fro nt p osit ion after the first lap. Robert Willis (Pe n) was figh ting with . another rid er ove r seco n d pla ce as they came up to a slow rider. T he slow guy went sideways ; the two fast guys and the slow guy made a nea t little pile of bo dies and bikes . Meanwh ile , Boy ette jus t kept on coo kin ~ and won. First , Expert was Charlie Marshall. In th e seco nd ro und, Boyette took the lead from t he start. Behind him was J im T u rner on hi s wired together Bul taco. J im chased Tom fo r several lap s b efo re being ab le to ove rtake th e Suz uki . I t all ended after 2 0 min u tes with J im T urne r ta king th e win an d Tom Boyette taking secon d. That gave T urne r overall first for Experts and Tom Boyet te the firs t overall A ma teur win. Pete Scarlett (Pen) gra bbed th e hole-shot in t he 25 0 Amate ur class bu t ran in to stiff compe tition whe n Tom Boyette , winner o f 125 class, decid ed to try th e. 25 0 class . Pete, held the Suzuki o ff for a bit, but Tom came on with lots of m o tivation to take th e lead . Allen D re fs (Yam) over took Tony Borb a (Mai) and went on to finis h seco n d behin d T om Boyette. In th e second moto, Tom Boy ette took t he lead on th e first lap an d hel d th at spo t to the fini sh . Over all, Tom Boy ette (Suz ) to ok the win. Kim Reeg on a CZ too k secon d wi th two fourth pl ace fin ish es. T im Hart was third. T he 250 Ex pert mo t os saw Billy G r o ssi on h is Ve hkonen Repli ca Mon tesa take comma nd of both races to win the m handily, as he h as been doing of late. Ken Zah rt was able to finish seco nd in the first m o to wit h Dave Bunker a close thi rd . In the second mota , after -ab ou t three laps, it was a . rep eat p rogram with th e first fo ur places ex actly the sa me . ' Billy Grossi definitely h ad the course dialed in , as h e put so me distance on the seco nd p lace riders. D ave Bunker caugh t Zahrt to finish se cond giving him th ird ove rall fo r th e class. Ke n Zahrt took second overall d ue to the first moto being lon ger ; breaking the tie. Taking the Open Amateur lea d right off was Do n Hicks (CZ), b ut n ot witho ut h aving to pass Bry an Poul os (Mai) and Edward Sa ntin (Yam) . However , once in the le ad, Don jus t gave it th e gas and took it to th e finish ou t fron t, Poulos settled for a sec ond, In t hir d was Ric hard VarueI on a Greeves. Fo r the number two ro un d , Varuel gra b bed t he gas an d took the lead at th e firs t co mer, Brea th in g d own h is tailpipe was Don Hicks from Simi Valley . It all ende d .with Hic ks cooling it for second place an d Varuel ta kin g firs t. ' T his gave Hick s first overall an d Rich ard Varue l secon d o verall.
