M O R E G ROU ND Last week I took a very sophisticated managemen t co urse at the Universit y of Utah, When I saw that several District Managers o f the Bureau of Land Man agem en t were o n the roste r t aking th e same co u rse, 1 thought of t he go lden op portun ity to t ake these ogres on (our family h as fo ur b ik es). They were amazed how clean the cam ping ar ea was, the y h ad never had this experience before. 2. They had absolutely no dis orderl y conduct problems with anyone. The riders and spe ct ators wh o attended our event c o n d u c ted th emselves just like th ey always do, o nly this time, they were o bs erved by people who can and will h ave a pos it ive influen ce on our sport. VOICES OF THE WEST HICKS ON LAND Congra tulation s o n publishing the article, "A Con cern fo r Freedoms " by Mich ael J ordan. It was a pleasant surprise to read his referen ces to my view s on mai n tainin g access to trail riding o p p o r t u n i t ie s through co o p e r a t i o n with l a nd o w n e rs . a u th o ri ties, and o ther users. The "adversary " to ne of mo st of the articles you p ublish on th is topic h ave troubled me some, but since I am no t privy to dire ct contact with your circu mstances , I felt I co uld hard ly pass judgment upon th is ap proach. It has generally been proven that the fan atical fringe of ANY special in t erest group seldom produces lasting benefits for that group, I like to hope that personal dip lomac y c o u l d be en couraged nationally, for it is the only way to assure ourselves co ntinue d access to land, wo rking with th e other co ncerned , not s tandi ng off and hurling ac cusations of favoritism, discrimination, and fanaticism at them. I was happy to see you publish a viewpoin t th at effectively presen ted the conc ep t of harmonizing relationships involved in recreational land use . . SEE THE WORLD FROM THE BACK OF A HARLEY I just finish ed reading y o ur test of our H-D 35 0 SX . Gentleman, I mean to tell yo u an article lik e that does n o on e any goo d in th e industry at all ! Le ast of all, us deal ers th at sell this model. How in hell d o yo u ex pec t us to sell a product when you tear it to p ieces ? T he ligh tw eight market is getting b ad enough, and n ow your test on the SX just makes it th at much tougher to sell. I believe in telling th e tr uth, and Jets face it, the SX is n ot the best 35 0 in the co un try . However, it is nowhere near as poo r as y o u make it out to be. A ll in all, for the average rider , it is a damn good m o t o rcycle. The bike was no t designed fo r Joel Robert or Brad Lack ey, All motorcy cles h ave bad points. However, t hey are barely mentioned wh en y o u ar e testing other brands. Try to be a little more on the fair side if y ou can. _ I hav e ridden other 35 0's and 360's in the dirt, I like th e Sprint, You know wh y ? Because I don't have to car ry a tool kit to keep it running . all day. I can 't say the same for the others, Please try to st ay away from unfair tests lik e the SX. Thank y o u for 'y o ur time. SAM ARENA ,JR. Harley-Davidson Prods, San Jose, Calif, The nice thing is having to carry only one wrench to keep the drain plug tightened . The not so nice thing is having to carry a first aid kit for off-road rid ing..,E d . GRAND PRIX EXPERIENCES T his is another o f one of those com p lain t le tters , with a difference : it is co mp letely justified, A two-day Grand Prix eve nt was held at the Corona track, Flie rs/entries were d istribu ted at the OCM C Great Bear ra ce at RI R . Being basically deviat es , my p ar tn er an d 1 ride a sidehack an d are fro m Ph oen ix, Ariz. T he flier stated tha t the h acks w ould run at 3 :3 0 Sun day (A p ril l st , 19 73) , Well, it was an April Fool's j o ke on us an d two others. T hey ran the race at about 1 :30. T hey we re n o tified that our rig an d Don Davis' were co mi ng out to race at the lis ted ti me. T he on ly explanation I can suggest is th at they wished to get the hacks o ut of the wa y, sort of like second-class ci tizens, The upshot of th e affia r is that we drove a long way for nothing. Desert Center quickly loses its chann when you can 't race d ue to obvio us discourtesy. , An o th er subject equally cl ose to my heart: thanks a lot to the OCMC for the 10 0% pit-racer con trol. I'd ra th er hear drinking parties any time than an OSSA Stilleto n ext to my tent at midnigh t, Great Bear was well run. A, H. TELLIER Arizon a Sidehack Ass'n. Phoenix, Ari z.
