Mon tana Starts 73 MX Season - - - - - - - - - - by Ri ta Hansen MISSOUL A , MO Ilo'T., Mar. 18, 19 73 The first b ig motocross in Montana thi s year (AMA & MSRA sanctioned) was he ld b y the Hellg ate Motorcy cle Club drawing o ver 1800 spec ta t o rs. The "easy" winter th is year , with very little snow and warm 'temper at ures has brought abou t an early motocross racing seaso n in Western Montana, starting off with dust in stead of th e usual spring mud. T he big race of the day was th e 25 0 Expert class, with th e fa stest motocros s riders in Mon tana and riders from Idaho. T en sion mounted and engin es wound ti ght as th e st art er pulled th e rubber band tau t in front of the racers. Wh en it let go this ti me , th e came ra bugs missed their gigantic wheelie shots because there wa s n one - fast, straigh t . _ and steady as t hey came over the rise and in to th e first tu m . I The cloud of dust rose so thick no one co uld tell what was happening. Over the jump popped Mark Ggy o (Yam) lead in g with Steve Sp ence (Yam) second and Mike Hansen (Yam ) thi rd , the rest of th e field pressing close behind. By th e thi rd lap , Hansen had passed Ggyo and Spence and w as pulling o ut a lead wh en his rear brake locked up , and he fell back to finish fourth in that moto while Ggyo went on to win. The second mota Ggyo, Spence , an d Lybeck (Mai) cam e off the line first, while Hansen was back about lOth . Lybeck crashed and fell back to d ice it out with Hansen . • In the th ird rn o to, on ce again, Ggyo too k th e lead as Hansen m oved u p fro m a p o o r start to take second, pas sing Sp en ce by a wh eel on th e fini sh line. Self's Maieo to re out abo ut six fee t of snow fencing but lu ckily R on w as OK. Turner got th e overall win with Sel f second and Steve Bye rs (Mai) th ird. The m ud thro wn up fro m the bikes ahead of hi m had gotten in to his eyes and h e co uld n't open th em. • Gogg les wer e virtually useless in th e mud as many riders suffered th e same fate.
