Photos and Resu lts on P. 39 . $1000 MX at Muntz Cycle Park by Mark Milford Photos b y Ar t Cox an d Milfo rd MOO R PARK , CA L. , Mar. 25, 1973 Mun tz Cycle Park host ed the thi rd in a series of four $1000 p urse motocross events that will cu lminate in an invita tion -o nly $3000 race on Easter. True to the old saying "Where da money is, so is da hotshoes! n, none of the three Expert d ivisio ns was dominated by anyone rider and the ou tcomes were up in the air un til the final checkered of the day. The 125 _Expert class, looking much like a continuation of last week's Arroyo 125 Championship spectacular, was led in the first moto by Billy Payne on a Don Emler Penton. However, by the third lap, Payne, Ray Lopez (Pen), and Bruce McDougal (Pen) were all circulating within 15 yards of one another, making any little " slip count. Pay ne, who seemed to slip mo re than th e others, soon dropp ed d o wn to th ird . Lo pez, o nce p resen ted with a clear track, proceeded to build a huge lead over McDouga l, wh o, in tum , did th e sam to Payne. Whether Billy had slowed down or the o ther- two sped up was un certain , b u t by th e fifteenth lap of this thirty-min ute m o to , o ne of the few no n-Penton riders in the class, Tom Zahnter (Ric) m o ved up and also got by. From that point to the finish, Payne and Zahn ter were involved , in a toe-curling, all-or-nothin ' dice that kept the crowd's attention off pit-tootsies and hot dogs . Payne eventually edged Zahnter out securing third and a shot at the big bucks. . T he second mo to looked to be grabbed by Lopez as he took the lead fro m the first comer, but on the fifth lap, his engine developed a high-Rl'M misfire and Payne and McDoul(al moved - in for the kill. However, Payne lost his expansion chamber se veral mi nu tes later , and McDougal, desp ite so me har ro wing tries, could n o t see m to ge t past. Payne soon dropped o ut, and after so me twe nty minutes of " I bet h e' ll get him this lap" action, Lopez held on for the win and the overall. McDougal was second at the pay window and Zahnter collected thi rd. Although the lead changed hands a number of times in the 250 Expert class, at the finish it was Greg Robertson (CZ) who led by a huge margin and who, it appeared, would . steal the show in the second go. However, a massive pileup at the start of the second moto, caused a turnabout as Ren Rose (Bul) Jim Dawson (Yam) and .Ch uck Lunde (Hus) shot out in front. But Robertson, in an impressive show of skill comanderred the first spot halfway thru and took the overal win. Bill Payne , J im O'Neal, Mike Todd and R ay Lo pez , a ll Maic o-mounted , looked like th e German army co ming ove r th e start hill d ur in g 5 00 Expe rt Mo to one. At the checkered, it was Payne , Tod d, Lopez, Joe Root (Bul) and Gary Nixon (CZ). In m o to two, Payne took off first followed by Jerry Beaman (CZ), Lo pez , Todd, and Tom Claire (CZ). It was a Pay ne and Tod d race. With Todd pouring on the coals trying for the first spot. Payne won it but not without strong competition from todd. Claire, Russ Darnell (Hus) and Lopez were next. . A few of the "go fast" Novices were Evertt Angle (DKW) and Mark Proctor (Mn k) ; Bob Ridgeway (CZ) and David Smith (Yam) , 250 class; an d Mike Dale (Suz) who completely out-classed the Open Novices with two runaway wins. . ------------------------- ~-~---- - ---------- --- ----------- ~--- ------I I I I ~ ..
