Apr. 1, 19 73 - The weather was excellent today for the Podunk MC's third motocross of 197 3. Although t he weatherman had announced a te n percent chance of rain there was only one cloud in the sk y. It came along about 2 :20 P.M. from the so u th west and never got closer than about half a mile . It disappeared about 4 : 15. There was a little win d that could sometimes b e fe lt but it d idn ' t ' seem to bother anyone but Mrs. Chicken feet who said that one of her paper plates had been blown away. A fifte en minute search w as unable to tum up the missing plate. Although the sun shone all day. the temperature was just right for ra cing if y o u only wore Ieather panrs and a ventilated jersey. At 9: 15 A.M. Jeb Hinsdale 's tru ck radio said that the temperature in Podunk was 64 degrees ( Far en heit) , but the weatherman m igh t have been slightly in error be cause he thought it was going to rain as men ti o ned above (10%). The sun see me d sufficiently warm and Jenn y Farkleberry said that she has th e basis for a good tan that she hopes to develop th ro ugh th e co ming racing season if th e weather remains th is way (wann with · sun). WHITTIER HONDA OSS~ Motorcycle Trailers missed the afternoon weather report, but we will have it in the next story. It really is nice out here in the beautiful Podunk hills an d with the wirids blowing the way they were today, the smell of the sewagc treatment plant across the road is hardly noticable at all. Co me on out to Podunk raceway. As we say. "Try it, you'll like it." Track conditions were excellent with lots of dirt to ride on . One nice thing about the track today was that cows don 't see m to have been in the area as m u ch so falling wasn' t quite the hazard that it so metimes is. However, this mean t that the track was n't as well . wa tere d as usual. Du st wasn't a prob lem, h o w ever, because all the riders wore 72 19 Westminste r Ave. , Westminster, Ca. \~ . . .A t ~ V WH ITTIER HONDA Com ptete st o ck 14324 ~: Whittier Blvd. o.'e~:;:~r~~~ (2 13 1 698-0065 / MECHANICS We tnln MfIocha nic a lor the MOl:orcy clr InduBtry . Everyone fe lt the tr ack was well prepared and one rid er was heard to remark, "Su re is a safe track," as they p ut him in th e pi ck -up to take him to the hospital. The sheriff said that this was the last ra ce we co uld run without it, so we will hav e an ambulance next time . Th e event wa s b eautifully run ,wi th the first thirty minute moto of the minis six inch wheels, under four y ears, up to two h orsepower. less th an three races class being flagg ed off exactly at 5 :45 A.M. as scheduled. The even t was a real crow d pleaser, These little gu ys (an d girl s, when an y enter) really try 10 "get it on" (as they say , I think) ' and tum in lap tim es that sometimes approach th ose of the up to three horsepower minis. Th e event was given an extra bit of excitement when little Ike Grasscatcher (Briggs & Stratton) who was leading b y th ree laps, ran off course and got lost. He was found over in Mr . Le ntil'S pig pen, st uck in the hog wallow. Fortunately. it only t oo k 15 min ut es to find him, and he was able to reenter the co urse where he ran off an d re tain his lead, alt hough it was cu t to a lap and a half. The oth er 2 3 mini classes were ru n witho ut incident ex cept when Inky Gra sscatcher got his bootlace ca ught in the cen trifugal cl utch and lost his leg . His dad was on han d an d got th e kid . shaped up and back in the race to gamer the seco nd p lace tro phy. T he paren ts deserve so me recognition, too. They are right out there to ba ck those kids up every in ch of the way an d really suffer when Junior lets them down . Moving righ t alo ng, we come to the big bikes, the 100cc first d ay under six , over four feet tall, have seen a race, carb smaller than 20mm class. Isaiah Grasscatcher nailed down this one with a clean sweep . Alth ough he was the only ' entry , he was riding as though a pack of 400's was on his tail. Nice ride, Ize, In the powder puff class it was "M ean" Irene Grasscatcher doing it to the girls . That little tramp Susie Mae Dimwiddi e had the lead briefly through motos one and two, and it looked like she migh t wi n it until she fell on the last
