Imagin e my ch agrin and d isappointment afte r all th e preparation when a rear shock on my 4 ·month-old bike broke o n ly 30 minutes before start time. I , resigned my sel f to the situation, removed my tank card, and headed over to th e sign-up area to in vestigate the possibility of c o llec ting a refund before h e adin g 150 miles back h ome. Fortunately , th e Invader I ran into was John McGowan, who care d enough to inquire wh at the problem was, and promptly offered me the loan of one of th e Girlings o ff his b ik e so th at I co uld ra ce . Secondly, wh e re d oes th e AMA ac q uire thei r fla gm en ? I sat in th e grandstand on tum o ne and witn essed th e u nnecesa ry c rash of DuHamel an d Baumann. T his neve r should h ave h ap p ed but th e flagman on tu m one was happily visiting wit h people ove r again st the fence which he had to cross th e pit road to ge t to. I'm sure he m ust be getting paid to b e out there . T hank God the two riders wh o lai d their motorcycles d own to avoi d a fallen rider a nd mach ine in th e middle o f the track we re two of the best or it could hav e been d isas trous. This comer is th e m o st "blind" co mer on th e tr ack an d riders d ep end on a good flagman . There was n one, so D uHamel an d Baumann crashed. This flagman never did h is job eve n after th is incide n t. He co n tin ue d a t the "fen ce " thro ugh the ent ire race . Please do so me th ing ab o ut this before it's to o late. It is not a matter of being objective bu t of facts that really b o th ers m e. Mr. Ne il sta tes that th e man th at won the 250 Expert Main eve nt was a clu b member. T he winne r was Dennis Huff who is not a m embe r of any club although he is :i very accomplished rider. Experts suc h as Peter Lamppu and Gary Jones were required b y the A!vIA to run q ualifiers to ge t in. Pe te r calle d me S aturday eve n in g fro m Daytona to tell me he pl aced seven th in each money m o t o but that John Lancione, th e AMA refe ree , informed him afte r th e eve nt, th a t he might be d isquali fi ed in th e first m oto since one of th e scorers sai d h e had c u t th e cou rse. Peter sai d h e did n ot d o this, t o his knowledge. T he fo llo wing day, th e res ults we re p o st ed and Peter had, after all, be en d isq ualified. . When I w as scori ng for th e AMA during the m o st recent T ran s' AMA se ries, I told J ohn Lan ione th at I saw a rider cut the course , gocomp le tely o ff th e t rac k and ar ound a jump. I asked h ow th is sho uld be handled sin ce I w as only a sco re r reportin g to him, th e referee . He an sw ered to just fo rget it be cau se he, personally , didn 't see it . I really would lik e to know why my husband was p enalized in this m anner causing a drop fro m fi f th position overall to twen tv -Fifth . It strikes us that if a scorer or starter sees a rider cut the co urse the decision to penalize a l.tp (or whatever ) should stand.••Ed.
