Sp onsored by th e S outhern Nevad a . J ackrabbits M.C., th e Mini -Mint was conveived as a n ational race, giving th e. under 14 se t a ch ance to compe te with a wide cross-sec tion o f riders fr om th e seven we stern states this year and, if . success ful , to be expanded to include riders from across th e coun try. T here 'w as nothing on the course which couldn ' t be negotiated by the small est bike an d youngest rider, but there we re deep sa ndwashes where little guys had to paddle be cause the ir tiny engines j ust wouldn't pull it an d whoop-de-docs that would make an Expert groan. Everybody who fini she d earned their finisher's p in. Stumbling onto the course , one would assu me that there was a serious race going on. So me of the riders, in p ar ticular Mike Leh man/Bob Smith (Hod) a n d Scott Forwood/James McCoy (Yam) , displayed very smooth , almost p rofessio nal style. ' In th e nrues t class, bikes up to 65cc an d rid ers u p to te n years old , Gary ..... Wilders an d Fred die Johnson (Y am) took top honors. The pair was listed as having won first place in one class an d th e bo ys went in and told the referee th at the y di d not de serve the troph y; they had been pla ced in a class with bo ys y o un ger than they were. Corected, results placed th e Lukins boys in sixth place in their proper class and th e spe cial 'Sportsman' troph y was awarded to the m.
