Ka wasa ki came to Daytona after the 20 0 m ile National with th ree bi kes, ten
tho usand d o llar s (A m e ric an ), some very t ric k rid e rs, an d lots of support. Th ey we nt
ho me wi th at least nine AMA and FI:\1 sp eed re cords ra ngin g from 16 0 :\I PH 10 109
MPH.
Yvon DuHamel grabbed all th e K awa sa ki re cords except for the 24 h our sp ee d . He
used a K awasa ki 90 3cc four-stroke' en gin e prepared b y Yoshi m ura Racing. It wasn't
stock, but it had fewer m o d ific a tions than are allowed b y th e F I~ 1 o r :\~ I:\
rul e b o o ks. It h ad head w o r k. a cam, and other mi n or internal ch an ges. Fo r the F1:\1
record attempts the Yoshi mu ra engine was put in a bike wi th a fairing and a
streamlined seat.
With this set-up, DuH am e l obtained an average speed o f 160.2 14 :\IPII to take the
FIM un limi ted closed course re cord. An interesting note on this bike 'is th at it
h andled far better than th e o ther b ik es wi th ou t th e st reamlining , There was som e
can tr oversy as to w hethe r this w as due to th e st reamlining or
ch as sis that h ad
so mehow b een p ut toge ther just righ t . With this bi ke D uH am el also p ut th e pressure
on the 10 a n d 10 0 kilome ter reco rd s.
The exac t figures h aven ' t b ee n released yet be cause the AMA hasn't ce rt ified
th em. The o nly com ment fro m th e A},IA was tha t K awasak i ma y ha ve more records
than th ey exp ec t.
