Hocking, as on Saturday, took the lead from t he start and held the nu mber one spot through out th e feature. Rick's o nly c h a lle nge came fro m . Rob Morrison, as th e tw o Junior riders ran aw av from th e rest o f the field. Morrison, aboard a Bultaco, tried a - number of tim es to p ass Hock in g, bu t every tim e Rick seemed to h old Rob off. Taking the third p osition was Ex pert rid er Ro n Moore fo llowed by J im Odom, and Mike R en slow. Keith Mashburn , Tom H orton , J ohn Ge nnai, Butc h Davidso n, and Brian LaPlan te rounded out the t op ten. Davidson again was the on ly Novice at EJ Centro to m ake the Main event, and mo ved up to fifth place before dro pping out wi t h mech an ical difficulties. Jim adorn, just off hi s fine fini sh at the Houston Astrodome ; cap t ured the trophy dash w ith H ocking taking seco nd and J oh n Allis on, another Novi ce , p lacin g t hird. adorn won the first Semi with Mashburn sec o nd and Horton co mi n g th ird. In th e second Semi , Moo re was th e vic tor fo llo wed by Ho ck ing and Renslow, The th ird Semi w ent t o Morrison wi th Mik e O ' Brien and Gennai taking second and th ird respe ctively. Ho ckin g seems very hard to b eat after t aking th e AMA National Indoor Championship and n ow winning bo t h short track races a t EI Centro. Morrison will b e an other rider to watch this year as he took a second and a third at the Fair Grounds. . AI Kenyon, who finished second in ' Saturda y 's Main, was running second in the third Semi when hi s engine let go to put him out for th e day .
