Box 663 , EI Taro, Ca . 92630 20':.. TROPHI ES So much ease, in fa ct that several riders, when asked whether thay had trouble on the uphill said, "What uphill? I didn 't see any hill." But b y the time several hundred riders had c h u rn ed up the dirt the insignificant little hill had be come a major obstacle and bikes bogged down, riders ran into th ose T n fro n t of th em and, at las t report, th ere were sti ll 2 0 0 bikes stuc k on th e hill. The wind cam e up hard Saturday even ing, blowing o ver one ou th ouse and sca tt e ri n g hundreds of a rr o ws m aking it difficult to follow the co u rse . Among those lost were Tom Brooks, who was leading the race on hi s fathers box stock 125 DKW, Mitch May es, and Jim Fishback, who later said , " I feel like a Polak! Everything went wrong." Back about fifteenth overall, Cordis Brooks (DKW) was leading the T railb ike class. When Cordis s to pped t o pi t, Chuck Cartledge (Hod) dropped into lin e righ t o n his rear wheel. Cordis was first Trailbike, naturally, a nd Chuck fell w ay back as he had a fla t re ar tire which w rapped wire a rou nd his rear hub. Brother Mike Cartledge, also on a Hodaka, took up the chase and m anaged a sec on d in th e tra il clas s. Larry Roeseler finished third and from th e sta te of his little Harley Baja it is surp ris in g that he fini sh ed a t all. His rear tir e was flat, th e stinge r broken and dangling f rom his cha m be r. and th e upper engine moun t b olt w as go ne. It is unusual t o see a b ig bike leading th e ra ce th ese d ay s but, through the pits, Mitch Mayes and his 450 Husky had the lead with Tom Brooks in seco nd. They stayed lik e th at across tile finish line. Brooks h ad a near-getoff and cracked his head against hi s cross-bar. ' shatte ring a goggle lens , b ut was uninjured. Mark Adent h ad his 25 0 DKW out in front for a while but had dropped back to third overall at th e fin ish line for first 250 Expert with Jim Fishback (CZ ) cl o se behind h im. Tom Smith (Yam ) seems to have b roken h is st re ak of bad lu ck, and although he did n o t fin ish as well as he would h ave lik ed , hi s fif th o ve rall was go od fo r se cond Heavyweigh t Expert poin ts, with Brian Brebk er who now rid es a CZ ou t of Yamaha of Fon tana taking third in th at class and A.C. Bakken (Hus) in at seve n th o verall for fourth Heavyweight Ex pert. J immy Brown is back out on his Bay Ar ea Bultaco Pursang and took t hird 250 Expert place today. Jimmy gives a very good ac co un tin g of h imself when he rac es. Bob Doig (S uz) and Lin Pickens ( H u s ) battl ed it out for first Heavyweight Amateur today with Bob taking first Heavy an d first Amateur. Ed Williamson was third Heavyweight Amateur on a ' 501 Maico (1) Those things a re as rare as 750 Nortons in desert ra cing these days. (I'm goin g to get a lot of static from Maico riders on that crack.] Mark Steele and Ron Music matched their Bultacos p rett y closely and finished first and second 25 0 Amateurs, quite close togethe r and sandwiched between Pickens and Williamson. Geno Beattie, riding a Tracy-tuned 250 Husky, was third 250 Amateur. In the Novice race , AI Thomas (H us) had a nice lead , finishing first Novice at 101 overall. His wife was sim ply jumping for joy, shouting "You did it! You finally really did it !" (Nice to see ...!£!ks happy.) Chuck Carr [Hus] and Dennis Myrick (Yam) t o ok second and third Novice, Den n is being the first 250 Novice. While we were watching the regular finish the T rail Novices, w ho only rode the first lo op, we re fin ishing just past home check. R o ger Reed rode his Pe n to n in for first in that class an d at th at ti me he was run n in g an astonish ing seventh ove rall Novice. Roger will be an A mateur next wee k, according to Trailbike steward Jack Froelich, so you Trail Amateurs and Experts better be on your to es. Roger can real ly make that Penton hu m. Again this yea r th e Invad ers had a trash can a t th e fin ish lin e. I d on't kn ow why everybody d o esn't foll ow their example . Typically, th e fini sh line was o rde rl y, ca lm a nd clean. In spite o f the pro bl ems with th e w eather, Invaders put on a well -organized, th oroughl y th ought ou t race a n d most riders e njoyed it. If you t o ok 3 95 going home yo u were amo n g t hose treat ed to th e rare sigh t of sno w o n Cajon S u m mit . T he re was enough of th e wh ite stuff to induce photo n uts , snowman makers, and sno wball throwers t o stop an d pl ay for a wh ile. .
