Pressure fr om Brad in th e first mo to pla ced th e Yamaha and Kawasaki Team leaders nearly a hal f lap ahead of third. T he Husky rider was tai led thr ough th e' lefthander and over th e dropoff by Lackey and J immy Ellis. Ellis rode the first non-Team 4 50 Kawasaki seen in the series. By the en d of lap one, Brad had begun to work up a small lead . Pierre Karsmakers re m ain ed in hi s eighth place starting position for th e first three laps before initiating hi s drive for the front. On Iapfour he passed four riders, among the m Hart, Grossi an d DeSoto. Meanwhile, Jimmy Weinert after a terrible start was scrapping his wa y up to ten th pla ce. Weinert had lo st third pla ce by th en and rode in fifth behind Tim Hart and Gary Serni cs. He had mo men tarily go t ten bogged down in the ankle-deep san d th at co vered o ver half of th e track.
