Despi te th e su b-standard weath e r alo n g the coast and in th e Lo s An geles area, al most 525 rid e rs sh owed up to take par t in the event. . T he Le Mans st art m ad e things a little b etter off the starting line , breaking rid ers up and spreading them out. But so me of the ra ces were huge to say the least. Sm allest o f the six ra ces had 44 riders (no t to o bad). but th e lar gest ra ce had 172 riders (jus t a mi ght too b ig in an ybody 's language ). T ro ub le p opped up when muddy co ndi tio ns a nd bikes with out th ree number pl ates . co m b ined to give score rs fits . First ra ce was th e 100 and 125 Beginners, wit h 9 3 on the starting line. Clyde Chillenden (Hod) , took the t op b rass in th e 100 Beginners cl ass. In the 100 Beginners, under 16 class, Ladell Eide (M o r) , to ok first place. Both won th e bi g brass. Dan Pettigrew (Ric) , to ok the 125 Beginners, and Scott Breithaupt (Yam) , was a winner at 125 Begi nn ers , under 16. With ou t a d oubt, ra ce two was th e wh opper o f all t ime wi th 172 ride rs breaking from the sta r ting lin e in th e 175 , 250 , and Open Begin n er classes. . Ke nneth Klein ( Ka w). was a winner at 175 Beginners ; Mark Thompson took the 2 50 Beginners , under 16; Mik e Biddlingmeie r (Yam), wo n at 250 Beginners ; a nd Mike Cappello (CZ) , ca p tu red th e Open Begin ners class. Things leveled o ff j u st a bi t in race three , w ith th e Minibikes and Powder Pu ffer s d oing b attle. Some 5 6 rid ers hit th e star tin g line, with t he m os t interesting set-t o d eveloping between Br ad Du toit (H o n }, and Mike Brown (Ind ), in the 70 cc Min ibikes. Dutoit jumped o u t to a fast lead, but Br own even tual ly ca ug h t up . Unfortu nately fo r Brown, m ech an ical p ro ble ms forced him o ut o f th e race an d Dutoit romped t o a n eas y victory. Ken DeBlasi o (Yam ) , picked up the win in th e 60cc Minibike class. A win i n t h e Powder Puff co m pe tition went to Madelene Almeida (Yam) . Races four and fiv e were th e hottest - speed- wise - races of th e d ay , as every r\ Dyk e an d a bove rode in t he tw o even ts. Race four found 62 com p e ti to rs in th e 100 an d 12 5 h otsh o e d epartment doing batt le. Dennis McLaughlin (D KW), ca p tu red th e 125 E xp ert class; Ro ger W. ' R eed (Pe n) , won at 100 Novi ce ; Ma rc J ones (Yam ), lo ok the 125 N ov ice , u nder 16 even t; a nd 125 Nov ice vict ory went to Bruce J ones (Puc).
