At th e end of lap 1, it was S pr i ngfield , Oregon 's pride, Keith Nerse th rid ing a Maico for A- I Cycle of E uge n e, in th e le ad. Lead? He had a fu ll 10 minu tes on th e next bike. He was foll ow ed b y Ray Cr awfo rd (Ya m) Tom Mon tgomery (Hon) , Dick J agow (Suz) . In th e Pi ts, Ne rse th st opped to gas u p and co uld n o t restar t his bike . Aft er much ki cking and pushi ng, so meone n o ti ced that so me j oker (?) had pulled his spark plug wire . The sp ark lead back in place , hi s now flo od ed Ma ico had to be push _' arted . Nerseth st ill maintained his lead. By th e end of lap 2 and th e finish it was s till Nerseth , foll owed by hard charging . Gordon Young of Po rtland riding an American Eagle. Not far behind was 250 winner Tom Montgomery on a p otent 250 Honda single . The overall winner o f the Dec. 3 1 race, John Campb ell was next , still riding hi s trusty H od ak a.
