Everyone was able to run three twenty minute mo tos due to th e double wave sta r tin g sy ste m now in use . Experts co m p e te d for cash. Th e tal ented sidehack team of John Palfryman and M . Tomlinson on a very fa st T ri u m p h rig literally ran away from th e compet ition by flying down th e st raigh t and sailing through the mudhol e in every moto for a " gr an d slam" fir st. Tittlemier won the 125 Novice class, Tom Hainley (CZ) finally m ade the move to the Open Intermediate class after running aw ay from the Novi ce s during the past few months. Hainley did some fantasic riding in his second mota (the whole pack was o ve r the start hill before h e left th e lin e) to take th ird checkered. Keith Mertz gave it a valiant try, but his 360 Yamaha j ust didn't have the strength to challenge Bilton 's b rutish Maico. Mertz borrowed a Maico for the second m o to and won that, just to prove what he could do If... Bill Twinting had a pe rfec t score in the 125 class with three wins. His sty le was not perfect, however, as his Bu ltaco stal led in th e tr icky first tum during the first m oto . He migh t have d one it purposely, to tantalize Butch Wad e (Y am) and Geo rge Forbes (Yam) , They powered b y the fall en rider an d fough t for th e lead. Wade led a lap and Forhes led one; th en T w in ting p ass ed th em both and won the rnoto. He w as n ot h eaded ag ain for the rest of the da y, The 25 0 cl ass w as m o st cro wde d w ith 15 "b ike s o n the starting lin e. Young ( 16) G ary Benge won all three m ot os o n a C Z. S cott Harm on (C Z) an d Ken Te k ut (Suz) kept up a runnin g con test for secon d 25 0. Harmo n's steady p ace did the tri ck. Th e Trackmaster-framed spe ci al stayed with the leaders for about fou r la ps, then retired shooting ducks. The mini enduros and powder puffs were combined today (in stead of minis and 100s) . They fo rmed a pre tty tight group on the course, and ev eryo ne h ad a chance to race someone. Diane Harmon won her class on a 160 Honda twin (honest), which looked like a handful on the tigh t, bumpy track. The only one w ho beat her was the m in i class three-in-a-row wi nn er, Lee Eide, He was riding " su p er fast Steen ' s Hodaka. At the end o f each mini /puff m oro, Hotshoe Eide dashed fr om his little Hodaka to his big Hodaka to ra ce th e next class. He won the fir st 1OOcc moto a fte r a close race with Mark Lawrence (Yam) . T he secon d moto h ad th e same wheel-to-wheel duel, e xce p t Lawrence crosse d th e fini sh nn e first with Eide ho t on h is h eels. Th e th ird ' m oto was rea lly ten se . with two good riders each havi ng a o ne -t v.·o score . A gain La wrence . and Eide fo ugh t side-hy -sid e aro un d the course. Lawren ce led for three lap s, the n hi s b ike q ui t. Eide led the last three laps a nd finished first overall. Lawrence p u sh ed a cross the lin e and sa lvaged e nough p o ints to troph y in th ird p lace b e hind Eric Forb es (Ya m) .
