J e rry Kol e is o u t sick for a while. The two 25 0 Expert ev ents were ev enly matched with Larry Drew winnin g th e fir st an d Dennis Kin g th e sec ond. Drew is a local he ro and is ready in g for his as sault on th e Y amaha Si lver Cup in Madison Square Carden. King is th e yo unge r b rother of Kir k , wh o is b ack o n th e-s cen e. Kirk held off the advan ces of T erry Oten and Jim Yo ung a n d was happy for the win, his first as an Expe rt. The 250 Novic es were also split as the c o un t of ride rs climbs in stead o f getting smaller. Phil Caran do pressured Mark Yarrow for th e 200 Expert ru n, b u t Yarrow toed the n a rr o w line a nd ke pt the older Ex pert in lin e. Mann won easily, then packed up · and left im mediately. as is h is custom. Danny Davis (Bu l) hung o n for se cond . Carl Cranke won the first 12 5 Expert m o t o go ing away, followed by Ric k C le me n t an d Kevin Henry , all on Pen tons. The second moto also saw Cranke win ni ng with Bob Messer up fro m the South in w ith a se cond and Henry third. Clements' fourth and sec ond gave him second o ve ral l b ehind Cranke, Plymouth will run again on February 18 , 197 3, and th e Delta Dirt Ride rs hope to see y o u th er e . The n igh t's top performance , at leas t in the ey es of the fan s, ca me after Bob Bes t ge t his leg c a u gh t between two bikes in a st ac k u p in th e 12 5 Main Even t. The Open class h ad more troubl es, as Gary Nelson won what was s uppo se d to have b een th e Main o n William's b ike, e xc ep t that not all the riders wer e the re . The eve n t was run over again , and Doug Ea ston took l o p h o n o rs o n hi s Kaw asaki. The 100 Main was le ss d ramatic, w here R o c k F ra mpton rod e a Ca che H on d a in front from start t o fin ish in the fir st h e at h e won that night. Mo re th a n the oth er riders, e xcep t fo r C raig Williams , Rock has that "tra ck rid er" lo o k w hen h e tosses his bike into th e tu m. N o vice turnout was light, so th e cl asses were co mbine d to ov er and under 125cc, with Dan Ko okle t op d og among th e b ig bikes, and Steve Wayment winner among the little ·m ach ines. And in the Mini-Main , S cott Center put to w ork th e coac h ing from st epfather Adrain (A b e) N ebeker to run away from th e class on hi s H onda XL·70. But Abe was not t o b e o u tdone - h e proce eded 10 win th e troph y dash o f t op qualifiers on his XL-2 50, fr o m his Honda of Bountiful shop . In th e lightweight com pe titio n it w as Mik e Jennings o~a 12 5 Husky th a t swoo ped th e troops. J ennings had a Jun ior rating when he arrived but with the blue plate on he joins the ranks o f the scram b les Experts. It probabl y wouldn't h ave looked too go od if he had ridden th e Junior class with a n Expert MX pl a te, but he wasn't th e on ly on e around - wh o d id . and th e se inequitie s are th e things that riders suffer in the winter time . D on Kirb y le d the better part o f the 2 50 Novice Main but succu mbed to a case of th e fally -d ow n s com ing o ff th e las t tum.
