Young J -rr saw fit to co mp e te in both the 250 Novice. Division One and Open Novice ra ce s . a real te st of man and machine. C ompetin g agains t 15 riders in the 250 Novice, Divisi on One class, Borden looked magnificen t, grand slamming the en tire fi eld with ease. Then, facin g ano the r field of 15 riders in th e Open Novic e even t , Je ff again won via the gran d slam ro u te, Back-t o-hack races, and ba ck -to-hack victories. That's six m otos and 2 4 lap s around the rugged Carlsbad Raceway cou rse. Quite a day 's . work for an yone. Ni n e riders re presenting Co le Brothers of North Hollywood wer e on ha nd S unday , with the m aj ority co m pe tin g in the 250 or O pen Novice races, The greatest tu rnout fro m Co le an d Com pany was in the Open Novice divi sion , where the likes o f Ll o yd J oines, Gary Col e , Mik e Mck.night , Ronnie a nd R an d y Cole showe d th eir ta le nts. All but R andy were m ounted on Maico s (su rp rise), an d Randy was try in g o ut a Suzuki. J oin es fini shed second to Borden, with Gary Col e a fo u r th pl ace finish er and McKn ight a six th p lacer. All three gra b bed tr ophies, S till another m ember of th e C ol e clan, J oh n Lew is , m oun ted on a CZ, romped to victory in the Open No vice, under 16 race, agai n by way of the gran d slam rou te. T he Team Cole also p o sted qu i te a showing in the 250 Novice, Division T wo ra ce, with Mike Ho gan , pilo ting a Mai co , an d Llo yd J oines , m oun te d on a S uz u ki fin ishi ng o ne-two.
