JIM HO NET E R Cactus Cats M.C. C oro na , Calif. BRILLIANT OR HALF-BAKED? Since I first subscribed to Cycl e News so me m onths ago, I have been t r yin g to d e cid e w h e th er R on Sch neide rs is th e b rillian t in cisive journalist th at h e some times ap pear s t o be , o r the half-bak ed self-sty led philosopher that often comes through . His GAMBIT co lum n in th e 12 -19 issu e goes a lon g wa y t oward class ify ing him as th e latter. He makes a statement that the Natio n al Rifl e Associati on and the Sierra Club are two examples of organizations who have 'ab used th e legisla tive influences that th ey enjoy (gro upin g them with the "oil com p anies and oth er big business" ). A t le ast hi s . name-callin g is effective. Well , I can tell you that on thi s su bj ec t Mr . Schneiders d oesn ' t know his expansion chamber fro m a desert min esh af t. I am a tar ge t sh oote r, hunter, and I':RA mem ber, as well as an AM A m emb er thoroughly hung up on off-road rid in g. I th us fe el that I h ave so me ins igh t into th e p ligh t of both grou ps of en th usias ts. Mr. Sch ne iders ' ignoran ce is showing through; it is obvious tha t h e is p o o rly informed of the nature and function of the 1\RA . Gun -owners and hunters (partl y through the 1\R A) have only b ecome "p olitical" - in recent years, wh en the y fo und their co nsti tu tion ally-guar an teed righ ts bein g - assaulted by id iot p olitician s and the med ia. T hey have fou nd exactly wh at the bikers are only -n ow wa king up to , and that is tha t " there is a whole bunch of us," and we h ave a good deal o f political clout at the ball o t box (as I':.Y. ex -congressman Emanual Cellars and the la te ex-Senator Th omas D odd fo un d to their dismay). Bikers an d shooters have a great deal in co m m on and suffer m uch of the sa me ty pe of h arrassm ent. Bik er s are a vu ln erabl e mi n o rity group (as we 've fo und la tely in th e on-goi ng crisis with th e BLM), an d we had be tt er b e th e last pe ople to cas ua lly d ism iss th e righ ts and in terests of o ther simil ar gro u ps . If the N RA's efforts to f ight for con sti t u tio nally-gu ar an teed righ ts is "very o ffensive, imm oral, and o fte n illegal " (in Mr . Sc h nei de rs ' w ords) , th en th e efforts of MORE an d sim ila r endeavors fall in t o the same b ag. But, t hen, I\1r. Schneid ers an d I probabl y co uld n o t agree on much , because , whil e n ot a Sierra Club m em b er, I do o wn hikin g boots an d have b een known to (h o rr o rs! ) go back-packin g in the High Sierr as with Si erra Clubbers, The p oin t that I' m trying to make is th a t "bad gu y" labels an d finge r-poin ting j us t does n o t w ork o r make good sense. wheth er it is " th em" at "us" or vice-versa. PATRICK McEVOY Distric t 3 7 Nob ody We agree that a "devil theory " of perceiving world is probab ly unreal isti c and bikers sho uld, perhap s, be envious of t h e N RA a nd Sierra Club 's acq uired pol itical c1o ut ••.Ed. th e THE EUROHACKERS REMEMBERED T he E urope an Side -Ha ck Mo t ocr oss T ea m sho uld like to thank all the people who h elp ed us to realize o ur exh ib it io n ra ces at Hopetown, Pu yallup, Livermore an d Saddleb ack Park. It is th o ro u ghly enjoyed by m y h u sb an d and tw o year o ld so n . Bu t I h ave o ne small co mp lain t. Ed. YUCCA I d on 't car e to reveal exactl y how I kn ow ab out this situat ion, but I have heard all sides of th e story , unlike y o u did before y o u formed a bi ased op in ion . It ap p ear s you were very unfair in co n dem n in g th is ho tel without kn o win g th e other side of the story. How d o you know th e man is telling th e tru th an d that he j us t d oesn ' t want to get b ack at someone who caugh t h im at his gam e of trying to p ay th e h o tel fo r two peopl e to st ay th er e wh en he m ay have had fifteen or twenty p eople who just wanted to use th e facilities, for free ? I'm sure y ou think I'm old and part of th e establishment. I am 23 and do enjoy riding a cycle. It just made me so mad to read how these people who are running this h otel are being threatened of being put out of business and possible bodily harm just because some guy shoots off his big mouth. It is truly unfai r. Why didn't you get the o ther side of th e picture before telling your readers t o boy co tt th e Hotel. You co uld be inv iting a bi g law suit from th e owners of th at h otel. T h is is very po or journalis m. ONE PE RS ON WHO KN O WS BOT H SIDES OF THE STO RY We have heard bo th sides o f the storY - f rom Ron Hall and t he Yucca Motel. Why d id t hey pre tend no t to have his rese rvatio ns in the first place ? Why d id t hey immed ialely jump to t he co ncl usion that all th e peop le with the Halls were trying to rip them of f ? Having heard both sides , it st ill see ms like the propr ietors were narro w-minded. More po or journalism ? .. Ed. (Continued o n page 3 2)
