I t w as a sh ame th at th ere couldn' t h ave b een more tro p h ies , b ut I think th a t this way it m eans much , much m ore if you are good eno ugh to win one. T he ri ders rode tw o five la ps m o tos, and th e fin al was a ten lapper , wh ich reall y separated the "champions" fro m j ust spring racers. Fatigue really b egan to show as the lap s wore on . Today the rid in g order was switched aro und, with the Open class runn in g first and son o ne, down to the 100's . T he big battle in the O pens w as between Bo b Wh itl o ck , riding fo r A merican Ri d er S u p p ly, an d George Wegn e r. Bob (CZ) w on th e last bo ut in Decemb e r, an d "al so wo n th e overall, by win ning two m o t o s today, w ith George ed gin g him out in th e o ther . Geo rge also h ad a fine fini sh in the last ro u nd , an d ad de d tw o secon ds to h is rec o rd to fin ish second overall in th e se ries . S cott S till w as top N ovi ce, while Dave Blosser barely e dge d o u t h is fellow Su zuki rid e rs, b y b rin gin g home two secon ds and a win today . T here we re m an y n ew n am e s in the 250 Begi nners. In the first m o ta Bob Bongio rn o took an o ld Kaw as a k i "Greens treak" and pr oceeded to clean . house . He p u lled in to the lead on the firs t la p , n ev er to b e top ped. T he second mota was o ne fu ll of su rp rises, with Mike Bacich t akin g h is Yam mie AZ ( the one Barry Watkins b uilt in "Cycl e Guide" ) to the first tum fir st, and held the lead for two laps, until he w en t too high on a berm, and Bob Perlof slip p ed by, and leaving Chuck H artwell h o t on Mike's tail . Then next lap, Chuck ca u gh t Mike in th e sa m e place and flew on b y. The 250 Novices were dominated b y Manuel Fri mbres (Bul) looking m o re out of co n t rol than in . But he still made easy work o f the o ther Novices, and threatened some Juniors in the p roc ess ! Moto two of the 250 Juniors h ad t o b e o ne of th e h ottest con te ste d races o f th e da y . A first lap c ra sh put the ea rly lead er o u t of busin ess and le t j on Ma ic o las t we ek, CZ this "Mill e r, in the lea d, on ly to lose it to Rand y Hoff. Ted Sc ruggs cam e a ro u nd thi rd. Finally th e pressure of Mill e r a nd S cruggs knocked Ra n dy bac k to th ird . T h e winner was J on Mill er. T he 12 5 Begi nners was a b a ttle of w h o ever was lu ck ies t .
