WHO REA.OS CYCLE NEWS? A 125 winn er at Deadman' s Po in t. CRC MX at Deadman's N~body really loses if the ir he ad 's in th e right place. Point'~---------------- b y T h e Sh ad ow VICTORVILLE, CAL., Jan. 7, 197 3 We are reall y p leas ed to n o te the excellen t sp o rtsmansh ip d ispl ay ed b y on e rahter interesting person following th e Hooligan Ra ce . T he kindly so ul proceeded to rip C RC offici al J ack Barbacovi up on e side an d d own th e other, and took o n one young rider wh o dared to side with Barbacovi. Seems the CRC use d the usu al secret envelope b it at the en d of the Ho oligan , and the 100cc class was chosen. Unfortunately, th is was not the class h is son was in. His suggestion: The CRC sh ould give trophies to every class. This migh t be a neat idea if the kindly guy was going to pitch in enough money to foot the added trop hy bill . After all, the CRC really only holds a Hooligan race to give riders a Ii ttle ex tra riding time - not to provide a way to win ex tra trophies. If that guy wasn't bad enough, an Expert showed up des pite the fact CRC events are primarily for Beginners and Novices. T he CRC never t urns away su ch riders, and even throws in trophies should t hey wa n t to get so me riding time. Ho wever , this yo ung m an seemed high ly d ist u rbed wh en he couldn' t have money. My suggestio n : Check the event ou t be fore showing up . While on th e subject of Experts, Morgan Mal occo (Yam) , th e 15-year-old wh iz, zapped the 25 0 Expert fiel d, with a second go ing to Randy Fred rick son (CZ). Val Tamietti (Yam). was a win ner at 0· 75 Experts. An In term e dia te class vic tory was snatched by Do n Simonian (eZ). Desp it e separated ribs suffered last we ek at Rawhide Park, Ar t Meyer (Yam) , t ook a grand slam win a t 25 0 Veterans. An other CRC regul ar , J oe Pen a Jr. (Suz ), was a win n er at 0-7 5 Ve terans, breakin g a tie o n th e las t moto to n ip As ke r Larn kjaer (Suz), by a scant 30 p oin ts. Nine ty p oin ts was th e difference in the Open Novice class, wi th Steve Moss man (H us). a very narr ow win ner over second pl ace fin isher Brian Church (Suz). Chris DeBoer (Suz), a Phelan hotshoe, grand slammed the 250 Novice class. The Open Beginners race was settled on .the last moto, with Tony Pena (Mon) - Just like his dad - nipping Richard Grose (H us) , by 30 points. Another exciting race at 250 Beginners, with Ro n Clawson (Car), slipping past Dan Ayala (CZ), by just 50 points. Mitch Guest (BuJ) , fin ished first overall in the 250 Begin ners, under 16, despite the fact he's only 13-years·old. Guest also grabbed a fifth place trophy at 100 Beginners, under 16 . As for the 100 Beginners , under 16 race, Bill Kish (Yam), often referred to as the "Fish" , swam his way to a tight victory over second p lacer Larry D. Ripley (Yam). Ma rk Larnkjaer (Suz), slip ped past Mike Y o un g (Yam), on t he very last moto to grab a first p lace in t he Min ibikes , 6 0cc class by 50 points. A parting shot : The CRC is trying o u t a ne w scoring system, with a first , p lace ride now good for o n ly 150 poin ts. T h e idea is to m ake it more important to complete all three rno tos, than just grab 400 poin ts in one m o to , and coast to an easy trophy wit hout rid ing in another moto. CRC MX at Arroyo-- - - - - - -- - - -- - -- - - by The Shadow DEVORE, CAL., Dec . 23, ' 1972 Surprising. In one word, that's what the turnout was at Arroyo Cycle Park Su nday, the day before Ch ristm as Eve, and two days before Christmas Day. With so many rid ers out motocross racing so near Christmas, one has to believe everybody mailed early, and/or got all the gift buyin g out of the way in rapi d-fire fashion . Either that, or there j ust was n't any money to spen d this year. Speaking of perfect, there w as Ti m Hol m , who p er formed b rillian tly in the 125 Expert class. Zippin g through the track o n his Gary Nelson tu ned Ossa (w hat a p iece of mach in ery ), Ho lm comp letely o utclassed th e 125 Experts. The 100 Novice had th e likes of Regie Dunl ap (H·D) an d Pat ric k Hu bbs (Suz) co mpe ti ng aga inst ea ch o the r. CRC MX at Arroyo' by The Sh adow DEVO RE, CAL ., Jan. 6, 1973 Getting 19 73 underw ay wit h a bang, Morgan Malocco (Yam), swept to victory in th e 250 Expert class, then cam e back to take the Drag Hillclimb, as the CRC opened the year at Arroyo Cycle Park. Malocco, who did very we ll fo r himself during the recent "Suzuki Series" at Deadman's Point, was really great, performing flawlessly on the per fec t Arroyo course through all three m o t o s. For a change of p ace , the track was ru n backwards, giving riders so mething new for '73. One of those on hand Saturday was When you get two sharp riders like Dunlap and H ub bs out on the sa me day, in the same class, something has to give. Sunday it was Hubbs, who settled for -second place . Hubbs did get the last laugh on the afternoon, as he found himself a genuine Richard Young, and together they piloted a Hodaka to victory in the Team race. The Ripley Fan Club had plenty to cheer about Sunday, as Robert Ripley (Hod) captured th e 100 Beginners class, and Larry Ripl ey (Yam) too k the 100 Beginners, un de r 16, Division I event. And wh at abo u t the 125 Beginners class? Kurt Sofka - the one an d o nly Ku rt Sofka - whipped the field S unday, ma kin g his Pu ch sta nd up aga inst all co mers. No w if h e can j us t figure o ut s om e w ay to ge t Kurt J un ior's m o torc ycle back in shape so we can see tw o Sofkas in action each week. _ Dan Mo on, wh o rode to a win in the 100 Novice race. It was great to see Mo on and h is beautiful blu e Hodaka ge t back on th e win ning track. Dewey Ha rdcastle mad e his C Z d o the trick in the Veterans class, defea tin g Ed Sc heidler (Yam). Pro vin g th e point, like father, like so n : Gary Scheidler, riding a Yamaha (what else ?), finished second to Mike Lasker (Pen). in the 100 Beginners , un der 16 race. Inciden tally , the drag hillclimb is something to watch. The hill was simple enough so every bike could make it with a little effort, an d the rider efforts kept the spectato rs jump ing during the entire event.
