The heats were broken down into six affairs wi t h K irk - Kin g comi ng ou t of retir em en t to become the fas t qualifie r for the first 1973 pro show. Kin g took th e fir st hea t win ov er Steve Foster an d Bo b Go odma n w ho join the Expert ranks. Dave Hansen t o o k th e decided wi n in th e se cond over newly turned J u nio r S teve Fre dric kson and G ary Lo za no. Duane S pe nce too k fourth to keep up ap pearances fo r tha t ove r 40 set. Bill Mo rgan returned to hi s winning wa ys {af te r a b out with h epatitis), in th e thi rd h eat. In th e six th h eat Bob Scall y t o o k th e ear ly lead o ver Kenny Roberts with Kirk Tard iff tu cking in fo r third. On the st ar t o f th e secon d lap, R oberts d ov e his 3 6 0 Yamaha single under Scall y an d was ab out to set for a pass wh en Tardiff go t in sid e him and nai led h im good. Tardiff held on to t hing while Kenn y had to pick himself up rather fast to ma ke it to the sec on d chance h ea ts. T he Semis saw Hansen wi n the first over Morgan w hile J o e Henry took h is san a Kawasaki to the ch ecke red in the second . Roberts edged b y Tardiff for third and a berth in the Main. The ten lap con so la tio n went t o T ed Bail e y with John Ran d olp h h olding Mik e Hardy and Carl Yerby for second. In the 15 lap Main it was Hansen and th e Cycle Imports Suzuki th e quickest off the line for an early lead th at he kept for the distance. Bob Scally tried to keep on the outside of him but dropped back as the re st of the pack dove low. Morgan tied onto the coat tails of Hansen an d pressed him for the entire distance while the Novice Tardiff held h is own for third. Roberts, rid ing the 3 6 0 , Was having to handle greatly in creased HP b ut the handling wasn 't as good as the 250 Schwerma' s, On th e wh ole, the ti me s of the bigger motors appeared to be al most a half second slowe r per la p, but the preparation isn 't quite as refined as the 250's and so, in conclusive as yet. T he series o f indoors was con cl ud ed for the year wi th R ober ts retaining his c ro wn. T he Na tional held February 18 will be th e final in the Ch am p io nshi p series. Big for Hodaka because one of their little 100's beat 14 8 other bikes of all siz es in a 80 miles Hare Scrambles h osted b y th e Cascade MC . John Campbell took the overall win by a co up le of minu te s ahead of Terry Seal (25 0 CZ). Steve S to tesbury rode a stock Hodaka Wom bat for a win in the 125 class. Campbell's brother David (Hod) , although q uit e a wa ys fu rther down in o verall standings, took second in th e 100 trailbike classe, Everyone was amazed to see a 100 b ike win overall , even Campbell h imself. Bent on Ind oor Short Track" _ There were many top Northwest cross co un try riders entered but Campbell did th em in. The co u rse h ad many su pe r slo w spots, with the famous Central Oregon roc ks, but it also had seve ral miles of roads wh ere an occasional 8 0-9 0 could be attained. One rider th at usually does quite well at Cascade events thought he would not need goggles in the middle of winter and fo ug ht dust for three hours and had some sore eyes. The way this worked was th ere were two adul ts on the one Min ibike and the person sitting behind had a b allon put on his b ack and y o u had to pop these ballons, Well it looked like a go o d idea un til every one realize d that it w ould t ak e for ever to pop each per son ' s balloon, so everybody j oined in, p eople were running aro un d th e track poppin g ballo ons, and the last pers on left with a b al lo o n on was a winner , so five dollars went to ' ''ayn e Loe sch and Rick Oli ver. Some new and o ld n ame s we re se en in th e Trophy Dash races. Bill Curti s (Ind) wh o looks about th re e fe et t all out on the race track took a clean sweep for the n ight in the Minibike class, but Was p ressu red all n igh t long by Duane Crumley (Ha n) who has had a little bad luck, b ut is due. R ic k Oliver took another clean sweep in the 100 class and T rop hy Dash o n a Suzuki. . The 125 Trophy Dash A Main sa w Wayne Loesch (Pe n) an d Crai g Randal l (Oss), both heat winners resume thei r sh o rt track battl es at Corvallis. T hi s week Loesch and h is Pent on put it all together to sweep th e Dash a nd the Main with Randall's Ossa second in both. As much battling as these tw o do on th e track. th e y are good fr iends a nd c a n be see n to ge ther afterwards, laughin g and counting their p oints, sin ce both are tied for first. Steve Eason (Bul) must h ave had it to ge ther to nigh t in th e 2 0 0 A Main, o r els e h e de cided th at wh en he got second at th e last race it was tim e he go t fi rst, and th at is wh at he did, S t eve Toftdaul (Yam) was making him work hard in second. J . Schoonover simply runs away with any race he enters. He h as flawless st yle, hi s machine runs and hand les very nicely and tonight ran away with everything.
