'" " l6' c, Arroyo------------------------by K. C. Brintnall SAN BERNARDINO, CAL., Jan. 14, 1973 - Arroyo Cycle Park scheduled a triple-header featuring a drag hillclimb, CRC MX and trials school. The novelty of T rials riding drew the most interest of the three. . Trials riding has the enthusiastic supp o rt of thousands of riders and specta to rs allover the world, yet many people still think of trials as a bunch of crazy guys trying to defy gravity on funny -looking motorcycles. In an effo rt to clear up a few misconceptions about trials riding and to en courage more riders to participate themselves in trials, Montesa promoted a school ta ugh t by their U.S, trials team at Arroyo Cycle Park. Participating tearn members included Vic Conaway, Xavier J ordi, Rich Delancy and other "dab" speci alis ts . Besides exhibiting their considerable skill by riding up and down sheer walls and lo ftin g their bikes over foot-thick logs, th e team riders generously offered pointers to p o ten tial and would-be trials riders. Since trials is one of the few typ~s of motorcycle competition where M e- Cl M '" " .., " ~ W Z W ..J U >- U a rickr actually turns thc bike rather than just leaning to change direction, the instructors emphasized turning techniques along with lessons on balance and proper throttle co n trol. To enable them to get a real feel for trials riding, many of the participants and observers were given an opportunity to try out the Montesa trials machines: the Cota 123 and 247. The efforts of Montesa and Arroyo Cycle Park to establish a trials club in the San Bernardino area were well received by the locaJs . At least tw enty people signed up to participate in i rials even ts in the area, and many m o re had gained an understanding and a lot of admiration for the skill s involved in trials riding. Those who attended th e exhibition at Arroyo will co ntinue to believe that trials riders can d efy gravi ty, bu t crazy they certainly aren't. The drag hillclimb fizzled since most of the regu lar hard-core hillclimbers boycotted it. Complete res ults on the CRC m otocross will be in next week. Then th ere was the wh eelie contest... ---!Baymare MX {Continued from page T he Open class had a star studded cas t with Jim Weinert, Marty Tripes, Rich Thorwaldson, Bill Payne, Tim Hart and so on.
