Some di scussion was held ab o ut ca n celling the event , but clearer t hi n ki ng prevailed when so meone reasoned that mo t o cross is a te st of rider an d mach ine against the elemen ts. A fo ur -wh eel drive .rig was p ressed in to service t o break up th e ice in th e "water " crossin gs. Final ly the track was chan ged to Ton y Lucches i sta ys clean and dry . began , Steve Rosecrans (Y am) was first to show h is sk ills by winning all th ree mo tos or heats in the 100 kids class. His ' examp le carried through to the 125 J unior , 200, 25 0 Junior, Open Senior, an d the Old Man's class. In each instance th e class winner won all three mo t os his class ran. Without q uesti o n, the ride o f the day honors went to All en Brenton (Mai). The start of his third mota found Brenton with a d ead engine at the starting gate. To ad d insu lt to injury Allen had to kick, kick, kick in front of nearly 500 spectators to get h is bike going. On ce under way, All en n ew th rough the air as a resul t of hitting bumps o ther riders weren't going fast enough t o even feel. It was apparent that his go al was firs t place. On one oc casion Brenton rounded a co m er by bouncing o ff a berm and passed two slower riders while still in mid air! The fin al co mp ila ti o n o f points put All en in second place b ut an y wh o saw his third mo t a charge wouldn't d ispute his claim to b est of the d ay . Spectators , however, we re at a minimum. Severa l of th e riders were there to show off their new number plates for the firs t time. The only co m ment h eard on th e n ew numbers was made by R ich ard Horton, who showed so me co nce rn abo ut h avin g to wear th e number 13 pl at e in '73. After a w eek of snow , h ail and rai n, th e track hada permanent wet cushion th at was evid ently app reci ated by th e riders an d turned ou t lap t imes fro m 32 seco nds to 45 seconds . T here we re n o serious accidents for the d ay bu t th ere were plen ty of classic ge t-offs b ein g de m o nstrated. Rock y Mor a les b roke an ax le in the straightaway and new off into the righ t han der leavin g his Bul 250 be hind. J ay Glover and Bill Hartman got a lit tl e too close in th e 5 0 class. Glover fell o ff and rode on the side o f Hartman's b ike to the righ t-hande r were he again fell off. Maybe if he'd st ayed o n a little longer, they 'd h ave declared a tie. The 100 J unior class turn ed out to be the Special Main fo r the day and eve ry one th ought they were goi ng to see Ken Parker tak e it fro m start t o finish. G r e g Bookout thought differentl y th ough and p ick ed him o ff in th e last turn to take his Kawasaki in fo r th e win. _ Mike Delliplaine was still wearing his J un io r pl ates when he jumped in to the lead of the 100 Expert class aboard his Hodaka. The three more experienced experts in the class, all riding Suzukis, just h ad to follow his lead until Mike's bi ke blew o n the last lap . Lucky break for D avid Sh arp who we nt on to take the win followed b y Doug Garrison and Rod Sal mon. T he b o ys in the 2 50 Novice class were re ally mi xin g it up in the pack b ut wh ile th ey we re , Randy Lewis p ilo te d his Mo ntesa in to the w in ner's Circle. Bill Payne continued o n his wi nning way s as a 3 6 0 Expert, but has to t urn his Maico on a little h arder this time as he was pushed hard all th e way by Steve Gray and David J o nes. Bill might just be the Heavyweigh t Champion for ' 73 if he ean ke ep it up. Triumph made a showing in th e" Open Ex pert class at th e hands o f R ick Newby , Lyle Moore an d J im Lynch. Lyle is the new He avyweight Champion this yea r and was lead in g th e race for almost four laps but c o uld n ' t h old Newby back for the win . It's usually the Experts th at get the bulk of the publicity but the Novices present today put on a show as good as any Exp erts. Darren Pritchett ( 10 0 Nov).
