As for th e 100 Beginners , under 16 field, Kurt A nderson (Hod ), was the winner of the class •. Ku rt Sofka (Puc), was another standout pe rfo rmer on the lo ng , frigid day - te mperatures never did go above freezing - placi ng second in the 12 5 Begin ners class, th en co ming back to win the Hoo ligan R ace, when h is class was p ulled fro m th e sec ret envelope at the end of the event. Sh ay Huffman (CZ) , came on stro ng to win the Veterans Open race , with A I Bonnefin (H us), a wi n ner a t Vets 250. Whil e racing o n the Dunes' Shadow Glen o bs tacle course, Dail ey was never headed durin g three, seven-lap rn o tos f~r the big-bo re mach in ery, as he z ipped h is CZ to lo ng-yardage victories in each encoun te r. Wh en th e cre w reach ed thei r final-heat co mbat, even th ough Dailey appeared to be a cin ch for overall barring any mech an ical problem s - the. runner-up sp ots wer still wide ope n . An y o f four riders had an excellen t opportunity : Mike McKnight .lMai) , Martin Taj ia, who had already gamed a pair of second pl ace finishes on his Maico , Leigh De nnis (CZ) an d Hu~ky rid er Dick R obinson. When the chec kered fi na lly came ou t, those closes to overall victor Dai ley included McKnigh t, Tajia, who h ad worked back to fin ish sixth in the final heat, and Dennis. McA fee' s three st raigh t 125 win s, equall y as im p ressive as were those of Op en winner Daile y , came against a who's who list of th e top Nov ice riders on the West Coast. • Though recording somewhat e asy victories in both his fir st and third heat races, yo un g McA fee (Bu l) fo und himsel f behind front-runners !\like Gr een (Pen) and Ron Byar s (Bul) during ea rly lap s of the second co n fron ta t ion. McAfee was un abl e to assume com mand until his fif th circle o f the co urse durin g th at particu lar mo to . On ce there, how ever, there was not a lot of doubt a abou t the fin al o u tcome . He did. however. reco ver eno ugh t o an chor a secon d at the wire - enough for an overall win b y the narrow margin of just two points.
