Williams CASTLE ROCK, WASH ., June 3, 1972 - Although there see med to be no serious injuries. the Expert class saw a lot of riders down . The track was in good shape and everyone was pushing it. Sonny Burres was in the lead before multiple crashes caused a restart, and he moved out once again to take first in the Expert Main with Pat Marinacci (T ri) running second until the last lap. Jim Jones (T ri) moved past him into second on the last lap. Steve Baker (Y am) had the lead in the Junior Trophy Dash but Jim Einarsson (H-D) was right on his back wheel all the wav . Williams CLACKAMAS, ORE., June 2, 1972 An S 1800 purse was on the line tonigh t as the riders took the track. Fast time was turned by an inspired Ed Herrmann (Tri). lie had the pole in the Expert Trophy Dash but Randy Scott took the lead and the win. Ra ndy was favored to win the Main also, but he came up against Chuck Joyner (Tri) who took th e lead early in the race and held off Scott for all 15 laps. Sonny Burres held third all the w~. • Junior Neal Hu let (T ri) had fast time in that class, but was only able to hold the lead in the Trophy Dash for h alf a lap , then Steve Baker (Yam) took over and won it. Steve also won the Main with Keith Dunn (Tri) holding second throughout the IIlain . SHOE MONEY Ken Maely is giving can tingency for the rest of the dirt track events on the National Circuit this year. In order to receive this contingency the ride r must be ' wearing a pair of Maely- boots and steel shoe in the event. A ride r with a shoe or pair, of boots alone will no t be eligible. He must be wearing both . Top favorites, Corbett and Blunt, were sidelined from up-front finishes due to spills in IIlain action . Corbett, _ pressing Goade for second in the IT Main, spilled on the third lap , while Blunt made his dive on the fir st lap of the F.T. feature. Kawasaki-mounted and sponsored by T·R Industries, Sanders displayed his championship form that carried him to the same class division titles b y winning the 100, 125 IT, 1 DO , and 125 FT Main Events. Sanders' toughest rivals included Jim Stewart (Yam ) who finished second in the 100 Mains; Vern Maxwell (Southland Cycle Bultaco) second in 125 TT lIIain ; and Wiley Miller (Kaw) , second in 125 F .T.Main. In the J un ior di visio n , Ossa-mounted Jim Mille r was the class in h is fie ld by scoring wins in bo th 250 Ma in Eve nts lead in g every lap. Mille r was chased across th e finish lin e in the 250 IT Main by surpris ing " Big Rick " Wh ite a board an Ossa. Two FT heat eve nts shared the spotligh t with main even t action. T he 250 heat, an event that h as to go down as every bit as good as some speedway bike Class A actio n, saw Blunt lead the first -tw o laps with Goade in hot pursuit. Coming out of the firs t corner heading for th e second corner, Blunt bobbled sligh tly but it was enough to let Goade slide under to take the lead. Both riders performed magnificently to the checkered: The 125 IT heat was Maxwell all the way . KA ASAKI SETS NE RECORD Tiiuana To LaPaz 25 HOURS Larr y Bornhurst passed through the san Ysidro border crossing and entered Tijuana, Mexico at 1 :0 0 am on June 10, 1972. It's 8 97 miles to La Paz across some of th e most desolate country in the Western Hemisphere. Larry chose to ride it alone, with no pit or follow-up crews. Larry knew his Kawasaki would get h im through. Rain and cold were his biggest enemy .
