Ac tually it was j u st the op posite . Trask was dry an d th e Bad Rock was almost as wet as New Eng land's Berkshire T rials. I t rained all day Saturday and in termi tten t cloudbursts d ren ch ed th e riders on Sunday . Bad Ro ck, being held for the first time this year, attracted fewer riders than any o f th e o ther qualifying rounds: only 106 started ; but a good portion of th e serious candidates for the ISDT team slo ts were entered. In the imp ortant Trade Team co mpe titio n, te am s w ere entered fro m Penton , Yankee , Hu sky , BSA-Rickm an Div., Bultac o, Hodak a , H-D, Kawasaki (Pend leton Sp orts Ccn ter) . A lmost o ne -thi rd of th e en try was elimin at ed from co mpe ti tion b efo re th e first check by a long hill w ith a surface of loose st on es, made very slic k by several h ours of ra in . Everyone had to pu sh up th e h ill an d th ose not in shap e quit right th ere . Th ose wh o co ntinued had a difficult time with th e m ar kings between sec tio ns 2 & 3. Fifty rid ers comp leted the d ay 's I n ·m ile ride an d 21 retained th eir gold medals o n th e basis of route marks lost. Some of those m ay have been on sliver at th at p oin t due to p oo r special test sco res, bu t at pre ss time, these scores have n ot been co m pu ted. Cali forn ia's Lyl e T ayl o r p ulled his tire off and pu shed hi s b ike in to the co m pound on th e rim , with o nly three m inu tes to sp are bef o re disq ualifi cat io n. He fixed it th e fo llo wing morning. Northern Calif. Enduro ch am p Ben Bower had to fix a fron t tire , but he managed to stay o n a Gold. Wors e luck fell to th e Yankee Team with a total o f five fiats, three suffered by Charley Vin cen t. All were repaired, h ow ever , and Charley earned a Bronze medal , wh ile te am members David have Eam es, an d Dave Latham appa ren tly earn ed Gold s. S un day 's ride, wi th o nly intermi tte nt rain an d be tter course markin gs, w as mu ch eas ier and only seven of th e 50 Sunday st arting rid ers failed to finish. Sunday 's .sche d ule sp eed (24 mph) was yet too low and m os t of the better riders arrived at th e check s with 2 0-3 0 m in u tes to spare. T he re we re two spe cial tes ts each day, and th ey were run over the sam e terrain. On Sun day , o f co urse, th ey were run in th e op posite dire c tio n. Fro m the comme nts of th e ride rs. the co urses chosen fo r th e special tes ts we re ideal and time kee ping produced no com p lain ts. The Pen to n East Team, learning a sad lesso n fro m las t w eek' s q ualifying even t, j uggled their special test times on Saturday so th at thei r to tal stay ed clo se r t o g e th e r , w ith team man ager / rider Doug Wilford telli ng his tw o m ates Billy Uh l and Bob Grodzin sk i when to speed up and when to slow down. On Sund ay, they attempted to set fast ti me and ap p aren tly su cceeded. Doug Wilford 's score o f 253 7 app ea rs to be best while Billy Uh l's score o f 257 9 is second. Cal ifornia Trials rider Lan e Le avitt (Bu l) is a speculati ve th ird . Th ere arc no off icial resu lts as ye t, but it ap p ears th a t til e Penton T eam and Hu sky T eam we re the o n ly teams wi th all Go ld Medals. T he win ner o f th e Trade T eam trop hy ap pears to be the Pen ton Te am with a total bonus p ai n t score of 7752 . The Hu sky team (La rs Lar sson , Ron Bohn , Frank Piasecki ) accumu lated 808 1 for second. The Yan kee team, with tw o G old s and a Bron ze is p robab ly in th ird spo t. Bulta co Team earned two Go ld s (Dave Ekin s an d Lane Leavitt) but th eir third mem ber , Ro n Murphy, injured h is hand an d failed to finish either da y . They are pro b ab ly fo ur th .
