HUSI(Y TRICI( TECH TIPS o . '" '" Q. By C.B . Wood,Jr. co' ~ -, FRAME MOD IFICATIONS The frame mods sh own here are only for the purpose of ligh ten in g the stock frame w ithout red ucing its design w strength . All these mods are facto ry 2 approved, for they represent the ~ re moval of only non-critical members. ~ The removal of the foot peg brace is o done with a hacksaw after removing the engine. Cut aprox . '1'2" away from the frame . The position of this crossection is shown in drawing B. (A*) 3! B A ia-->-{ i The brace running from above the two outside swingarm mounts to the main backbone is not needed. If you are skep tical bear in mind that it has been left out on the new five speed Huskys, Be sure not to cut into the main frame members, best to cut a little aw ay from the m and then file it down !lush . On the rear frame h oop, be sure to cut just behind, not in fr on t of the rear seat mounts! Get a p lastic fender and sheetmetal screw it in to the aluminum seat base . It should be on}y 2{3 the length of th e original m easured fr om the back of the seat. • Be sure to seal up al l holes with silicon seal or some thing similar, then pain t. T a ke p ride in y o ur H us ky , work carefully . and th e results will p lease you . Look at you r air filt e r h ousing . Se e all th e pain t ru bbed o ff on top ? Remov e th e h ousing and th e th ree m oun tin g brack ets. Now p ush and twist the casti ng in u n til it to u ch es the fram e b ackb on e (0 , draw in g B) . . By dog leggin g th e t wo b o tto m mo u n ting b racke ts (t op not n eed ed ) and cu tting an inch deep V-sh ap ed piece out o f the housing, you can move th e filter in aw ay from your leg. This is not critica l , but it makes th e bike feel better in b etween your legs with the down pipe . One can even fill up the space in between the tank and ' the seat with foam and duct tape so that as you move back and forth, your knees get constant support. Splitting hairs perhaps, b u t what feels right is good . • half meets the barrel. T his is the old trick of matching your ports. This is best done 'when the engine is split (taken completely apart) by sliding the barrel down the through bolts on first one- case. then the other, and removing any ridges while in position fro m inside the transfer ports. With th e pis ton held in side th e barrel an d the top level with the b ottom of the transfer ports. mark where th e rear transfe r (booster) port in the piston drops below the port in th e b arrel. Be sure everything is CLEAN when reassembling. Be sure you have a good ring, or all this won't help at all. Inside the exhaust port on top one can usually find a substan tial ridge. By cutting the manifold as shown (A ) and removing m etal as shown (B) one can improve the exhaust flow. It has not been noted th at any of the above men tioned modifications will resu lt in a change in carb requirements. It would he wise however, to tak e a p lug reading .so on after you are running again . Hu sa V ARNA FRONT MOD IF ICATIONS A is a crossection of the REAR transfer port. Ro unding the edges from the inside an d a lit tl e at the top outside will allow for a more efficient flow into the port. B is a crossection of the piston boss at th e transfer cutaway. A lot can be re moved here without dange r, but what is shown is all that is necessary. C is a crossection of the piston skirt (front and back). Again, a lot can b e removed, b u t this is all th at is ne cessary . o ,is a crossec tion of the o u tsid e o f th e transfer port wh ere t h e e n gine case - , J!" _,'?t~ • -4f .,:; " - '$ , . .. ~ After you've made all these swell mods to your Husqvar na, you' ll be ready to ride just like M ark Blackw ell , right? Wrong. You still need to get a trick downpipe for the Svenska. PISTON MODI FICATIONS The mods shown here are best no t done by a novice . For, un less you are very rich, a lu n ch ed piston can lead to unhappiness, financial distress, hypertension, insanity . and occasional death for b oth machine an d rid er . .. I : -:. T his will ligh ten your fro nt end un sp ru ng weigh t by ove r two pound s. You will feel it. lt is recommended that you leave the oil drain holes in tact. Cu ttin g it d own will leave too little thread to safely hold the drain screw in place. By pointing the two oil drains to the re ar (easier oil draining) and reversing your front wheel (brake st o p in left fo rk) you can cut the brake stop holder off of the right leg. Don 't goof here ! Also make sure that your brake cable isn ' t going t o hang up on something as th e for ks go up and down. Put it together, stop it a few times and then sand off the high spots. Don't let an y grease or oil to uch the shoes. Don't clean your shoes with fuel mix, thinner is bes t. Shoes once oiled will neve r really work well again . Keep ith o se shoes righ t and you can dive under most anyone in a hairp in ... Whi le you're at it, get the fork seal housing opened up to fit a good fo r k seal. Please don 't go below th ese measuremen ts, unless you want to eat rocks. . SPECIAL ADDED GOODIE Want to make sure that fro nt brake stops like a boat anchor? Put the brake plate with shoes on a lathe (the axel with grease to prevent slop and a few spacers wo rks fin e. ) Set the shoes sligh t1y more open than where they are when fully applied ins ide the drum, and tum the shoes down to match the in terio r drum measurement.
