By Mike Kerley _ LANCASTER, CAL., June 4 , 19 72 - It was hot en ough fo r an yone o ut in th e high desert Sunday, bu t apparen tly Monty Lee didn't th ink so. Riding a 125 Yamah a in th e mon th ly bike-breaker Hare Scrambles h osted b y Greyhounds M.C., Monty go t ou t in front and stayed there, b ringing in his bike way ahead o f the pack and far enough in fron t of th e o th er lead ers t o chalk-up his fourth overa ll win at the Po nde rosa. When a rider has won on the sam e course thirty-six times in the p ast six years, you start believing that he h as the thing wired . When he 's eaten up en ough Open class machines on h is 125 to win ove ral l fo ur times , yo u start hearing things like "Very, very fast," and .. t+$%/& *!"· They' re takin g-up a co llection nex t month t o buy Mo nty eno ugh gas to get t o ano the r co urse. The Ponderosa is a rough, fast co urse , and it produces some spect acular falls every mo nth , b u t they' re usually ou t in the back country whe re the re 's no one to "OOh" and "Ahh" but the buzzards. Generally, the buzzards d on ' t bo ther, becau se th ey 're to o b usy moving rocks out on to the co urse an d licking th eir chops - or wha tever it is tha t buzzards lick . T he only rider who required med ical attention S unday was so me guy who took a header out in the bushes after th e race. Without hi s h elmet.
