LET'S GET IT ST RA IGHT I wish Cycle News would print the facts! I'm referring to the paragraph about Roger Maahs losing his cycle down a mine shaft in the Master Links Hare & Hound. . First of all , it was not Roger Maahs, but Mike Manning. The Monarch min e Was not ribboned off. In fact, there was ahsolutely NO ribbon or lime anywhere near this are a. This mine shaft was only 60 yards off the co urse , not 100. I measured it. I wan t to add that the only reason I got o ff th e course Was because of th at stupid bottleneck just before th e iirst che ck . By the way, I'm not the first gu y to go in the Monar ch mine, and there might have been more if I didn't st ay and flag, because several more riders cam e on the exac t trail that I did. MIKE MANNING Sunland, Calif. 1.- VOICES OF THE WEST and so on until we run o ut of riders. To determine the winner of a series of mo to cross even ts, (Trans-AMA for example) the rider earns points for h is overall finish position . 150 fo r fi rst, 120 for second, 100 for th ird , and on to twentieth place. National Championship Points for mo to cr oss are also awarded in this manner, depending on the amo un t of the purse, as in our other types of professional racing. JOHN LANCIONE AMA National Motocross Referee KEEP IT CLEA N The Desert Foxes Motorcycle Club would like to take this opportunity to thank everyone who attended our race and helped to make it a great success. We would especially like to thank all of you for leaving the camping area and pits exceptionally clean . It is unfortunate that the people who are cri tic al of our use of the desert were unable to see how free o f litter you left it. Our clean-up crews were especially thankful as they did not have to spend endless hours cleaning up o ther p eople's trash . LEE GORBALL Desert Foxes MIC NOISY ...AND TOO FAST MYST ERY Bill Smalley said what many of us feel ab ou t Indian Dunes - No silen cer s. But, in addition , they don't even enforce their own rules - the "5 mph in the pits" signs are a j oke. This is a bad situation . We need pl ace s like the Du nes badly . But, until they begin to play the game by today's . rules you'll find me out in the nice quiet desert. JOHN T. SHAFER Nov. 624X Dese rt I wa s near the Buzzards M.C. ca m p a t the Dual European Scrambles on May 13. I did something wrong and I crashed . The Buzzards were very helpful altho ugh 1 don't remember what hap pened as I was unconscious. A nurse came and helped . I wo uld like to thank her from the bottom of my heart for getting "involved" as many people in the world today wouldn't have. Thank you , Buzzards and mystery nurse. SUSAN WALKER J ackrabbi ts Downey , Calif. OL Y MPIC SYSTEM Your st atement about the AMA scoring system of last y ear is not quit e co rrec t. Last y ear, the poin t system per m o to was 400 , 30 0, 225 , 160, e tc . The system re ferred to in th e article was th e o ne used to determine the winner o f a series of motocr oss events. I must agree th at it's not the finest scoring system yet devised . T hi s year we are . scorin g by the " O ly m pic" sys tem. The letter fr om Mr. Alan Sieroty on th e helmet bill, AB 744, proclaimin g that he did no t vote f or the bill angered me co nsiderab ly.
