DlCOSTlR .•• . t Jeff Wright went fastest. finished worst due to mechan icals. By Buzz Baty IRVI NE , CAL.. June 4 . 1972 - A huge field o f rid ers sh owed up today to m ake this Cl\IC Sunday even t at Saddleback Park one of the la rgest in sometime. Not only was it a large Junior en try , but the Expert divisi ons were really loaded with talent. All three: 125,250, and 500 h ad at least twenty man starting entries. Come Monday morning, Kelvin Franks and Stu Peters will be mailing ' out some pretty large CMC checks to the guy s who were in the buck spots: One guy in p articul ar. who will get a whopper of a check and a well de served on e, is Greg' Smith . What did Greg Smith do to deserve a big chec k , the preponderan ce of the ink, and very probably the running of his pi cture ? Not too much. Without frills and folderol. he simply rode two Maicos in four twenty minute plus motos to win the 250 and 500 Expert divisions. Now a little simple arithmetic will plainly reveal that with at least twenty entries in each class, 'G reg proceeded to do it La about forty of his peers. And that isn't the easiest thing to do even on your be st day . Particularly when guys lik e Chuck Minert on his Beezer, Gary Harris on his Su zuki, Dave Smith on another Maico are pushing you in the 500 class, and riders like G aylon Mosier, ste ad y riding Jon Derhammer, and hot, new 250 rider, Tommy Croft are try ing to be at you in the 250 cla ss. Jeff Wright, who has Ascot wired, forgot his wire today. It wasn't the wire that pulls him around Ascot, it was a piece of wire needed to hold his Puch together. Jeff was leading in the first 125 Expert an d lost his ch ain for a ON F, Ken Zahrt getting to the checker first. Jeff took th e lead in the second moto right from the start, only to lose a coil wire for another DNF. This time it was Bru ce Bar on. co min g o n strong. to ta ke th e win. Ken Zahrt notched another first overall for himself and Bultaco, Bruce Baron taking second on hi s 125 Husky and Tommy Croft getting third with his Penton. CAL., May 31 , 1972 Attendance, at least as far as riders and (conspicuous by their absence) recognizable name riders con tinues on the decline at Asc ot. I won't pretend to know why, but I do know that there is no fire or excitment, or that feeling of urgency that is a necessary ingredient for a successful motorcycle program of any kind . It doesn't take much to tell the story of the 125 Experts. One name : Jeff Wright; o ne motorcycle: Pu ch, and the story is complete. John Volkman got second on his Bultaco ; Lynn Stokey, third on a Penton. The onl y drama occured when Jeff was left at the starting line in the second moto with a dead engine and had to drive around the whole fie ld, whic h he did in three lap s of a five lap moto. I have see n h ard fough t duels where there was a lot of crowding, pushing, elbows, and what have you, bu t 1 had never. until tonight, witnessed the gross, unsportsmanlike conduct that 1 witnessed in the 500 Expert Division tonight. As previously mentioned there was a real lack of recognizable CMC name riders. Bill Stubbs has been an Expert for just a very short time and tonight he was looking pretty good. In the last moto he was dueling with Brian Lendl, that perennial back marker and obstructor to the progress of faster machinery and riders and dean of the chr on ic complainers. They tangled and both we nt down in the ninety-degree tum at the north end of the course. Lendl was laying on the Baty deck with his Maico , Bill Stubbs was not quite all the way down, and was trying to get his Suzuki back up and going. What is the childish tantrun-throwing rider in the person of Brian Lendl doing? He's got One arm wrapped aro und the front wheel and forks of Bill Stubb's Suzu ki, trying to keep Bill from getting his machine upright. At the same time. he's trying to pull loose any ele ctric or fuel lines that he could reach. This man/child kept it up long enough. that the third, fourth, and fifth place riders got by b efore Bill Stubbs could finally release his bike from thc insane grasp of Brian Lendl, , _A ll of that mis-directed energy went for naught. Bill Stubbs took first overall, getting second on his Maico was Brian Lendl (pity!), coming in third was Kirk Alexander on another Maico. Long Beach Ho nda has been burning the midnight oil bringing the 250 Honda into competitive form. 1 do believe they have got it. Bob Hosford won the 250 Expert class tonight as Hosford showed that the Honda now has a big bunch of ground grabbing horsepower. He won the first two rounds with little or no pressure from any source. In the third moto, he was pressed hard by Steve Urgo on a pretty white Maico. Steve as well as Bob are both relatively ' new Experts. Steve won the last mo to, when Hosford dropped the Honda at the Start/Finish line. Bob recovered quickely however, and got back up for third in the last mo to and first overall to Steve Urge's second, Glen n Lund. was third on a Yamaha. (Results on page 40)
