N Murray, Chambers Square Off e " .., " ~ w Z W -J U > U Boris M ur ray sm okes through another low to middl e ni ne-second quarter. H is Triumph twin can turn in these E.T .'s seemingly at will. By Brent Bailey CARLS BAD, CAL. . May 27, 1972 Along w ith th e usual brac ket racers a nd gassers somebody d own at Carlsb ad Raceway ca me up with th e b righ t id ea o f pitting Bori s Murray and h is tw in-engined Triumph against Bill Chambers and his 9 6 in ch fuel Harley . The p rogram was three heads-up match races to be run in -between th e funny car ro un ds . Murray cam e o ut early a nd di aled in a strong 9. 32 at 167 .5 9 mph . After making th e p ass, Boris co m men ted th at th e track was fine up to th e 1000 ft. mark then the going go t a little rough . FIRST ROUND . Ch ambers has been experimenting with a new Danny J ohnson slid er clutch. He had problems with it h o oking up to o hard , so as a resul t Murray to o k the round wi th a 9 .3 3 at 163 .24 vs. Chambers a t 9 .68 at 161.35 . Bo ris has b een ex peri m en ting with a n ew t rick cam an d w as very pl eased w ith th e re sults . Fo r a li t tle more to p e nd boost Mu rray dropped in some larg er jets and was read y to roll fo r round two . Chambe rs pulled a few magic adj u stme n ts o n his clutch and he too was c h am p in g at th e b it to get movin g. T he w ait be tween rounds was pre tty long. but we m an aged to keep o u rselves busy b y fen d in g o ff the rattlesnakes a nd rabid wild b oars th at seemed to in fe st th e giggle-weeds su rro u n ding the track . I feel for th e gu y s th at rode m otocross th e next d ay . T h e second ro u nd p ro mi sed to be a little closer w ith b oth riders now more familiar with the tr ack . Well , same o le story. Due to fry ing th e clutch the entire 1·320, Chambers 11.45-77 .8 8 couldn't quite keep up wi th Murray 's blistering 9 .1 8-163. And th a t' s without a fa iri ng. Up on returnin g to th e pits, Bill learned lesson No. 3 4 75 of his traction manual. Y~u find it m o st difficult to attach 2 00 fu el burning h orsepower to a seven in ch clutch (slid er o r not) and le t it sp in for one-quarter o f a mile . Upon closer inspection o f his c1utch (?) he found what appeared to be th e remains of several overheated phonograph re cords. But due to th e effi cie ncy of his crac k pit crew (his wife and himself) the clutch was replaced in time for round three . Meanwhile, we find Murray wo rkin g feverishly on h is rear tire . T he o ld one was plain ole wore-o u t and th e only spare was a ski n wi th a wei rd co mpou nd set-up . Despite the shorte r w ait b etw een rou nd s tw o and three, bo th hi kes were ready to go in p len ty of tim e. Ah, but the best laid plans.. .d uring the round three burn out Chambers managed to bend a rod severely enoug h to split one of liis barrel s. T hi s gave Murray an o pen ru n o f wh ich he fu lly took advantage . He sm o ked it through at 9 .75-162.74. If it wasn 't for the poor tire co m p o u nd , wh o knows? On my way out o f the p its that nigh t, I noticed a small pl ate at tac h ed to the front forks of Bo ris ' bik e. It read "This bike turns sp eeds o thers d ream o r' . Ain't it the tru th!
