Actu ally th e C RC and Ra wh id e did every th ing they could to control the d u st sho rt of runn in g th e water truck af te r every mota which would have extende d the racing d ay far into th e nig h t. Open Begi nners Robbie Giles (CZ) and T racy Bray Uaw) really got their m ach in es spot on as they PUI a whole 10 1 o f di stan ce betw ee n themselves and th e co m petitio n. An in te re st in g thin g was d oing o n today as Phil Gunderson , father of o ne o f the 250 riders , d o nated his time and tractor to d o so me work on th e tr ac k, lie put in a ni ce jump on 'th e fro n t sr aigh t and dug up th e last tw o lurns so the riders could start making berms. Hats off to a guy who is co nce rn ed and wan ted to see the track improved for the benefit o f all . T his Saturday the CRC is at Running Springs with spark arresters and Sunday at Deadman's Pain I. (Results on page 40) - - - --ACE at Indian Dunes By John Grout VA LENC IA, CALIF. , May 28 ,1972 With a whopping entry divided into 16 separate racing div isions . five ride rs we re able to wi n all three motos in their class during to day's moto cro ss explosion on In d ian Dunes' Shadow Glen course. Frank Giardina, Mike Bruno, Jeff Black , Tom Barnett and Bob Stephan took home b rass with sweeps. I n what was probably h is fines I effort to date, Giard ina went w ire -to -w ire in the final two 250 Am/Ex rn o tos, defeatin g overall ru nners-u p: Tim D avison an d Ken j anson , J eff Black , w ho was co m peting in th e races fo r IOOcc Begi nne rs , ap peare d to p o sses far m ore talen t than o ne u su ally expects to find amo ngst the nco-riders . Black's style was so co nvincing th at it 's a shame tha t there weren 't a few . Experts slipped in w ith h im for an ab ili ty index. Tom Ba rnett waged so me fi erce duels with J im Bauer, w ho is the 1972 points lead er among J u n iors at the D u nes, befo re finally b eing d eclared the d ay 's overall wi nne r in th e 125 +4, " B" Division. Bob Stephen, grabbed h is third straight overall at the expense of a fantastic gang of 250 +4 sliders. In clud ed among the group which was beaten by the seri ous, young Bultaco pilot, were Rick Varvel (G re) , Dave Haugh (CZ ), Dick Kaeding (Mai) and Gerard o Hernandez (CZ ). R o b "Weird" Morgan, the Husky rider from Whittier, again made h is trip to the S hadow Glen circuit worth the effort, defeating a rocket-swift brigade of Open Seniors. Finishing behind Morgan were Pal Young, Mike Marsh (Yam) and Rick Marsh (Mai). The sud den sh ift o f racing si tes w as n eces sary as th e fo restry service cl amped down on a lack of spark arresters at R u nn in g Sp ri ngs. Today's action was highlighted by Stewart Dowd going the Iron Man route by riding in the O pe n and 250 Novice even ts and ge tting second in both . Dowd's effort in the Open class was wild indeed as he crashed his Maico on the steep downhill in the first mota and only got a seventh. In motes two and three he placed first and second respectively. First place winner Bill Petras (CZ) was never overshadowed as he scored two firsts and a sec ond to virtually waltz to the overall vic to ry . The 250 Novices weren't about to be run out b y the big bikes as there was some heavy d icin g among the lap three, Mike Gu nderson (Yam), Dowd (ass), and Tom Kirk patrick (Yam). In rn o to number one it was Kirkp atrick over G u nderson as Do wd was nowhe re in sight. The secon d' ro und saw Dowd wax Gunde rso n while eve rybody e lse was o ut in the t u les so m ewhere . ln ttue fash ion , the th ird m ota was o utrageo us as Dowd w as blitzin g th e p ack an d enjoy ing a good lead un til h is ex ha ust pipe fell off d oing so me crazy things to hi s horsepower. Kirkpatrick st arted to close and Dowd was ge tt in g desperate. Finally the pipe fell completely off and there was Kirkpatrick right on Dowd's rear sprocket trying to get b y. Going down the last straigh t to get the checker, Kirkpatrick slipped by Dowd and it looked like it was over bu t Dowd went berserk with the throttle and nipped out Kirkpatrick b y the w idth of his front tire . With the absence of regu lars, Doug h ad no problem win ning th e first Open Exper t m ota , beating out Chuck Cze rwinski (Mai) and Scott Frisby (Hus). The second m o ta includ ed Ron Bass (Mai) re tu rn in g fro m Carlsbad , and h e m o re th an m atch ed Grant's showing b y win ning the last two motos and ty ing the track lap re cord of 1:57 set by She rman S chneller in the first 250 Expert mo ta . G ran t d idn't ride the las t m o ta . De n nis Law is Number I 250 rider in District 35 and his three consistent rides payed off with the win in the Open cla ss. S herman (the "Lil Devil") Schneller had another one of his good days in the 250 Expert class easily winning all three motos. The 125 Experts had three evenly matched rid ers; Greg Higgins (Bul) , Larry Greer (Yam) and Vince Clark (Suz) battling it out for positions. G reg won the first two m o to s w ith Larry Greer, who b roke in the first mota , winning the last mota . Vin ce put in three good rides fo r sec ond overall beh ind Higgins. The "hard luck" story o f the ce n t u ry has to go to Max Hanburg. lie had only finished one race in his life o n his CZ 360. Finally his Dad (and new sponso r) bough t hi m a new one. Max went out an d zapped th e Op en Juniors in his first m ota . Wh ile lead ing the second m o ta he h o led a piston . Max bo rr o wed a frien d's bike an d w on the last mo ta j ust in time to be d isqual ified for swi tc hing bikes.
