It was th e n p u t to th e true test, as 100 riders gathered for a two day mee t. Ride rs were very well sa tisfied with th e rough, hastily b uilt co urse with about nine ju m p s, two straighaways, lots o f turn s, a nd a real challenging switchback . Darrell Cussins led all the way around the first lap of th e second m o to of the 251-Qpen Novice class before Leon Jones took ove r . The thi rd lap foun d Cussin s agai n in th e lead bu t not fo r long. J ones go t h im o n th e nex t tu m , th en Cussin s, th en J o nes , then Cussin s, all in the same lap . Durin g the seco nd m o to , o fficial sco rers sa id Lamp e c rossed th e lin e fir st, wh il e C a lifornia rid er, Mike Chamberlain, on a Maico pro test ed he to ok th e checkered fla g firs t. The flagm an w as standing ap p rox imately 20 feet fro m th e fini sh lin e an d Chamberlain slowed after th e flag just en ough for Lampe to cross th e finish lin e firs t. Chamberlain claim ed th e finis h lin e was wh ere th e flagm an gave th e checke re d, but track officials said it was where th e d esign ated fin ish lin e was. Un able to determ in e th e winner , it w as d ecl ared a " d ea d hea t" . But , th e ride rs felt th ere should be a d efinite wi nn er. The win was give n to Lampe sin ce he crossed the fin ish line first, acc o rdi n g to th e sco re ke ep ers. Lampe, also rid in g in 25 0 Ex pert, challe n ged Bob Wh ar t o n in an o the r co n trove rsial race . At th e st art o f th e last moto, th ree bikes fell a t th e fir st turn. Officials ca lle d a rest art. Brian R o ss o f the AJS Storme r team filed an -official protest. By p re cedent, th e officials h ad never restar ted a ra ce for three riders dumping. Ho we ve r, Steve Hamby, race promoter said other races had been rest arted in the past u nd er sim ila r conditio ns an d did not chan ge his d ecision. Wharton, wh o was o ne of th e three riders down o n th e first sta rt fin ishe d firs t wi th Lamp e second. During th e secon d mo to , Lampe led all the laps with Wharton passin g him in the last 50 fee t for the win. Lampe, racing wi th an arm brace, also missed the first mota win by two seconds, which gave Wharton overall wi n in th e 250 Expert. (Results on page 40) ! T h is w as m y fir st experience with th is type o f event, whi ch produced pl enty of exp erien ces - so m e good, so m e n ot so good. The rid e was an enjoyab le way to spend a Sunday afte rnoon, excep t for en co u ntering a co uple of snakes (y u k) an d so m e clod wh o y elled at m e to ge t ou t o f his way . I w as t rying to d o ju st tha t b ut th ere were several uncoope rative an d u n y iel d in g trees in the way . In d espera tion I ch os e go ing o ff in to the brush t o being mauled fr om b ehind by a knob by-tir ed Husky. I will admi t that th e guy d id say "thank-you" when he whizzed by me.
