A few weeks back I came to T he Big City (Lo ng Beach , Ca lif. , n o less) an d th e guys at C ycle Ne ws o ffe red to take me to th e Half Mile at Ascot. What yo ung , up-and-corning hick co uld pas s up a chance like that ? T ha t ni gh t I stru lled up to th e ga te feeling e x tremely important with my pass in my h ot little fist. After severa l Oh ·sure ·k id 's and what had to be th e w orld's bi ggest ru naround, I fin ally got in to world fam o us Ascot-just in tim e to see th e tim e tri als. T he spe ed at whi ch th ese guys were tou rin g the oval w as asto und ing . Su rely , they d on ' t go th at fast when th ey 're all o ut there together, bunched up. Bo y , was I in for a surprise! I have a 250 m otocros s mach ine th at I thought was p re t ty fast . Co mpared to the Novice 250's, it's just a moto rized skateboard . Even th e Novices wen t faster than an y track ride rs I h ad ever seen. Next came the Juniors. If they go this fast , I don' t know if I can take the Exp.erts. Yo u gotta remember th at I am used to w at ching ru st in g cars. I watched in saggy-jawe d awe as the; Experts ran off th eir heat s. It's not possible fo r man and motorcycle to go th at fast ; it must j u st be a dream. A fter pin ching myself severa l times, I fo u nd I really was awake . The tw o riding styles that stand ou t in my mind are th e flashiness of Dave Ald ana and th e meth odical precisi on of Gen e Rom er o . . After th e last Main, I go t to go down in th e p its and rub elbows with all the human bullets and ogle their machines. Their mach ines were like nothing I'd ever see n . T he gu ys b ack in Tucson will never b elieve th is. I've been spoiled. I may never be able to go b ack to watching the ca cti grow, Brockman Protest SAN DIEGO ,CAL.,June 4,1972 - Sal Pelu so w as just about re ady to accept the tr ophy fo r today's Brockman Memorial 100-Lap IT win , but he was protested at the last minute by Kevin S tafford. S taffo rd believed th e lap charts were in erro r and th at he h ad wo n. The charts w ere n ot in error, b u t a recheck d id show th at S tafford had won, throwing the re mainder of the results in doub t, A complete rec heck was unavailable at presstime so th e complete report, with photos, will appear next week .
