By Buzz Ba ty CORONA, CA LIF., May 2 i, 1972 - A rnotocrosser's Shangri La may o r may not ' ex ist, but here in Southern Californ ia I am sure th at a h undred and forty p lus o f th e CMC 's fin est would, for this time and this place, spe ll it Coro na Raceway . T he C~ IC staged its first motocross here today, on a track that was as near perfect in condition and content of varied motocross terrain as the y had ever ridden. There's a song called Home on the Range that has a line about not a I IT discouraging wo rd was heard. A nd that was the case today, as yours truly talked to rider a fter rider , who had nothing but praise for Co rona Raceway's motocross co urse . There were superb efforts in every class. AI May an d Way ne Boyer in the 500 Expert Division; Ray Topham, Tom my Croft, and Gaylon Mosier in the 250 Expert class ; John Vo lkman , • Tommy Croft, and Matthew Roth in the 125 Expert class; an d the really superb efforts of Junior Bobby ~laxwell in winning the 125 and 250 Junio r Divisions on a pair of very rapid PAY STO READ THE eMe-was • lIultacos. Wayne Boyer rides with Marty Tripes so often t hat from a distance it's difficu lt to tell whether it's Boyer or T ripes. They ride so mu ch alike, and Man , tha t a in't b ad. Way ne w as lead in g the first of th e tw o , twenty- minute rn o tos, o r here at Corona, ten laps with the 500 Experts ru nning two mi nutes twenty-four seconds a lap , closer to twenty -five minute rno tos, when his front tire separated fro m the rim. Wayne pulled into the pits, an d as a mark of his determination, ca me ba ck o u t to finish the moto, Al ~Ia y, o n his Maico , lo oking reall y good; came o n to win the first mota over Brian Lendl on a Maico . For a full twenty-five minutes in the second 500 Expert moto, Al May and Wayne Boyer staged a wheel-to-wheel ,. I ',; r " , , 1 , donnybrook that held fans and non-riding co mpe tito rs in to tal rapt attention . On numerous occasions, Boyer would push his CZ alon gside of May, or even in front, o n ly to have Al d rive righ t past him again in the blink of an ey e. Boyer probably used every bit of skill, de termination, and horsepower tha t he had avai lable, try ing to beat I\lay and his Maico , b ut Al ha d eve rythi ng that Boyer had, plus just a little mor e. With half a lap to go , Boyer finally unloaded at the botto m of the horseshoe lo op , up on the hill just before co m ing ba ck on to th e infield, taking the pressure o ff AI, wh o motored in to take the ch ec ker, and a well deserved first overall. Brian Lend! got in fo r second on his Maico, w ith lI' ayne Boyer fillin g out the third spot. Gaylon Mosier looked like the sure winner in the 250 Expert Division, winning the first moto over Tommy Croft, and Coron a regu lar, Ray Topham. In the second rnoto, everything went wro ng for Gay lon , as he got a really bad st art running dead last for the first lap. A t the same time, Ray Top ham went ou t in front, pulling away from the rest of the field , like a home-si ck angel he ading for h ome. Lady Lu ck deserted :-losi er en t ire lv o n th e fourth lap, Gayl on had mov ed through th e field. and in to sec o nd place, an d alt ho ugh the chanc e was slim, th ere was enough time left for him to ca tc h the flying CZ·mounted Topham , but it was at this moment that the throttle cab le came adrift from the carburetor slide o n Gaylon's Maico. An d for Gaylon , th e day was do ne . Ray ca me o n to win his first 250 Expert moto of th e lon g d ist an ce variety , and he . admittedly was ex hausted. Tom my Croft ran seco nd in both motos on his Maico , an d was second overall to ~Iosicr's thi rd overall, John Volkman put everything together today , an d to ok first overall in the 125 Expert class abo ard hi s Bultaco, beating Tommy Croft and Matthew Roth on th eir Pen tons. This 12 5 Expert class produced, in the se cond moto, o ne of the stran gest , hilarious. scenes th at this writer has ever witnessed.
