,. co N " C> '" Q. ... N CMC LIONS ONL YTHE fANS A EWILDER ~ Payne, Pessy , e tc ., Gary sa id and I qu ote, "Wow! They arc rea lly fast!" Then I introduced myself and had a short talk with Gary and his father. With G ary 's 'a ttitu d e, coupled with h is father's support and encouragemen t, alo ng with the way he rode tonight, I'll freely go out o n a limb an d predict th at Gary will be b ack in the winner's ci rcl e as an Expert in a short, short period of time . J oh n DeSoto was back a t the beach to nigh t, bu t 1 and beh o ld , J ohn was 0 riding the 250 and 500 classes aboard CZ's, not Suzukis. In ta lking to John in the pits, he wan ted it clearly unde rs tood that he was only trying the CZ 's and no co m m itm e n ts of any kind on John's part have been made. Bill Payne , John DcSoto, and Dave Pessy !licked up all the m o ney in b oth th e 25 0 and 5 0 0 Expert classes. Bill Payne was first overa ll in both classes on h is Maico s, DeSo to was third in t he 250 class and second in the 500 class. Dave Pessy was second in the 250 and third in the 500. The 250 and 500 Expert classes were filled to overflo wi ng with head t o he ad raci ng, ex citment, and h appenings in every m oto . Da vid Pessy took h is Ossa o ut in fr o n t in th e first mo ta w ith a hol e sho t th at was so good th at nob ody was abou t to ca tc h him a nd h e w on it b reezing. In the second round for the 250's , DeS o to took the lead, with Hart seco nd an d Pa y ne th ird. T hat 's th e way it wen t righ t up to th e half-way p o in t of the last lap, whe n all of a sudden Payn e go t a dri ve on Hart and passed Tim, ", ' N >- '" ::0 ~ w Z w -' (J >(J almost at t he same instan t, th ey bo th flew past a rapidly slowing John DeSoto whose CZ had suffered ign it ion ills. Joh n was just able to salvage third behind Payne and Hart. I n the sec ond round for th e 5 0 0's , Gary Nixon and Tim Hart tan gled, go ing down together. Nixon w as a ble to res tart , bu t T im was ju st barely ab le to walk and hobbled back to the pits. Tim was h u rt badly enough t ha t he changed into civies and we nt and had a ta lk with the Carson ambulance peo pl e and, of cou rse, d id no mo re riding for th e nigh t , The last 500 Expert rna to of the nigh t was a real gas. Payne and DeSoto were side b y side for three quarters of the first lap, with John fin ally ge ttin g the advantage over Bill. John held the lead and even stretched it some. That stretching plus J ohn's own super stre n gth and desire is all that saved him th e last m o to w in. Head in g for the finish line , with a h und red yards ' to go, the spokes began p ulling out of DeSo tos rim o n th e rear, The tire was fl at and eac h time th e wheel wen t around. more spokes carne loose as John tri ed to ge t it to the finish line . But th e CZ ju st co uld n ' t. ma ke it o n its own , th e rim was no longer a ttac he d to the hub by even o ne sp ok e. With Bill Payne closing fast, DeS oto jumped off h is no w one-whee led scoo te r an d lit e rall y ca rr ied it across the finish lin e to ta ke th e check er just as Payne new p ast. To say th e c ro w d wa s hy st eri cal would be like say ing tha t water is wet. ( Re sults on page 36) Bill Payne doing a job at lio ns. By Buzz Baty WIU IINGTON , CALIF ..
