" Fast Cats art and Hershey Due to the Finish By Buzz Baty \\'ILMINGTON, CALIF. , April 28, 1972 - Where do you find the words or superlatives to describe the ac ti o n o f th e Lions Fast Cats and th e show th ey pu t on tonight? The Candy Man, Bob Hershey, fo r th e second Friday ni gh t in a row won th e 250 an d 500 Expert classes, but it wasn' t easy! In b oth classes , Tim Hart and Bo b Her shey traded first pl ace fini shes, third place fin ishes , fa lls, an d whal h ave you , to th e del igh t of a jam packed )(I"andstand crowd, wh o time af ter time, were b ro ught to th eir feet cheering an d clapp ing , as t he Candy Man and th e Vale ntin e Kid du ked it out. T he fac t th at th ey were h arassin g each o ther was bad enough, bu t guys like Bill Payn e, Bry o r Holcomb, Ro n DeS oto , Bill Rubl y , Bob Messer, David Pessy, were right in th ere kee pi ng everybody h on est , Now, I sup p ose th at if I wat ch ed a race and took notes, I co u ld give y ou a lap by lap, pass by pass. fall by fall, report of Friday n ight's action , but I don't take notes, I take pictures, Admittedly. wh en taking p ictures, yo u prob ab ly mis s t wo p ieces of ac tio n while yo u' re photograph ing one. So, I can ' t tell y ou in what lap Bob Hersh ey fell, o th er th an th at it was in th e first mota, whi ch Hart won wi th Hershey finish ing six th . I can te ll you th at Hart fell in th e se cond mota. Hershey got the win and Hart ca me b ack for fi fth. I can tel l vou th at the last mota for the 250 Experts was an absolu te un q ualified man-l o -m an rid ing c o n te st be tween Bob and T im for five full laps, fro m th e drop of th e gate to the fall of the chec ker. T ime after time , Har t wo uld get a wh eel or half a bi ke length alongside Hersh ey only to h ave Bob ou t acce lerate him, get traction wh en lI art c o u ld n ' t or ju st pl ain shu t th e gate on T im, It was one of th e wil d est , most su perb mo tocro ss duels I've ever seen , T he Candy Man got th e win on his CZ, Tim Hart and hi s Maico were second, and David Pessy and his Oss a got third. It wasn ' t quite that clo se in th e 500 divi sion. In o rde r fo r Hart to win overal l. he had to win th e last mota, Hershev knew as well as Har t wh at he had to ' do to win overa ll. and h e d id it ma king a drive o n Bill Rubl y h al f way -e~ ~ e, through the last lap to take over third spot , scoring his third d ouble win in as rnanv weeks.
