In answer to when is a wo rld record a world record, I would suggest th at when distance is achie ved wh ether it b e motorcycle ju mp ing, ski j umpin g, pole va ulting, or any o ther test of a man's ability , a wo rld record is a recognized distan ce by a renowned sanctioning body that exceeds any p revio usly accomplishe d di stan ce. Even taking into account all other motorcycle ju mpers' clai ms, without any verification, the jump Sup er Joe performed on October 31, 1971 at the San ta Cl ara Fairgrounds was the longest succe ssful jump that any man has ever made. CA RL SHIPMAN Alb uq ue rq ue, N.M. BOO CLAYTON I In a recen t article by Cy cle News' p ubli sher, Charles Clay ton , he is q uite cri tical of false claims of reco rd s for moto rcycle j ump ers, as h e sh ould be, wi th th e excep tion of one in stan ce he sights on th e re cen t ABC Wid e World of Sports telecast. I am employed by th e orgapiaa tion that promotes and man ages m o torcycle jumper, Sup er J oe , who w as th e fea tu red performer on the telecast in . q u estion and I w ould like to se t th e record str aigh t on a cou pl e o f poin ts . Mr. Clayton stated that "ABC Wide World of Sports was conned into announcing..:a new world's record' distance for jumping a motorcycle". He further stated that the network retracted the statement a week later. The retraction , as I understood it, was simply that the MIA did not "sponsor" wa nts t o sa nctio n su icide contest s, and wh o can b la me th e m? " C ycle New s will co nt in ue to repo rt alleged d ista nces but ma ke s no en d o rse men t of any ' wo rld reco rd ' clai m. Pub lisher Clayto n even re jected a large paid advertisement (not Super Joe's) tha t carried t he offending wo rd s. Guess he mea ns it. .. Ed. BOO CLA YTON, II I'm referring to " Wri tin ' A round" by Ch arles Clayton in th e April 25 edition. Has any body seen "The Time Mach ine " , a movie th at dep icts a possib le fu ture of mankind ? Or read the book " O rp h ans of th e Sky " b y R obe r t Heinlei n , th at de pi cts an eq u ally grim view of wh at co uld h ap p en - a " leader" race an d a "worke r" rac e? T he " Le ader" race wo u ld designate (ap point, en fo rce) th e areas in which the " w orkers" co uld go to rel ieve th eir tensio n s an d exist in ign orance of h ow th ey be came workers. Even with sm all groups of workers as sp o kesm an going in servitude to in fo rm th e lead ers tha t all is well an d th ey would con tinue to h arvest the "green paper" th at the Leade rs use as currency for a game of Mo nop oly . I'm so rry , Mr. Clay ton . I' ve sup p o rt ed y our views u n til n ow . If y o u will con tinu e the long-ran ge viewpoin t that y ou eschewed in y o ur earlie r e ff o rts to b an d us tog ether fo r a common ca use, th en I'll con tinu e to sup port your pl atfo rm. If y ou persist in advising u s to work .for th e govern men t, then I gu ess I'll make pl ans to m ove to Canada o r something. I say this because I believe that we b ikers are on e of th e last holdouts o f th e " wo rkers" and if we fail , all is lost. If we are forced on to reservations, then they will have won ag ain . Please, Mr . Clayton, h elp expand our im mediate goals into m o re far-reaching aspirations. Help band u s toge th er to fight, not surr en der. Fi ght? That's no t really th e co rrect ch oice of word. "Inform" wou ld be m o re app ro p riate.
