Bob Gill performed the world's first canyon
jump on Sunday, 16 April, 1972. Bob Gill Cajun
Canyon, on a backwater of the Mississippi River, is
over 120 feet wide, with sheer sides ranging over
50 feet down to the water line.
The approach run to the takeoff ramp is rather
short and uphill. No practice run was possible; you
don't just divert from the takeoff ramp and
wheelie past a canyon.
With the confidence of the Champ ion he is, Bob
accelerated from his starting point, in an absolutely
strai ght line up to the t akeoff ramp and over the
canyon, coming from 20 feet out of the sky to
land without a ramp on th e opposite shore.
The distance trav eled in the air fro m ramp to
ground was an astounding 152 feet. A perfect
performance by a truly remarkable young man.
CONGRATULATIONS,
DIFFB
