Going winless in IT Main eve nt action , Sanders (Kaw), came back strong to win the 100 and 125 IT Mains. Bob Brown, ended a two week p eriod of frustration due to mechan ical breakdowns, by win ning the 125 IT Main, It had to happen sooner or later, Swett (Hon), who is unquestionably getting better with each race, upset highly regarded Sanders in 100 IT Mai n event action. The Downey rider not only beat Sa nders, b ut m ade it look easy. De spi te any event or p ro gram that is highl y publicized as an outstanding event , the re is alw ays so me dis appo intin g elemen t. T o nigh t it was no differen t. (Results on page 36) By Art Lo ya SOlTfH GATE, CALIF ., April 13, 19 72 - High winds that raked the Los Angeles area touching off hazardous driving warnings and downed power lines, did not prevent Larry Shaw, Bob Sanders, Bob Brown, and Allen "Buckwheat." Swett, from creating their own whirlwind performance Thursday night at Trojan Speedway to share the winner's circle as Main event victors in the IT and Flat-track racing program. Aboard his Bell Helmets sponsored Yamaha, Shaw grabbed the lead coming off the second jump fro m Da n Corb ett (Bul) in the 250 IT feature on the first lap . While Shaw extended his lead over seco nd place Dan Corbett , Jim Miller and Les Bomar, made a race of it for t hird positio n as b oth rid ers m oved up on Co rb ett , b ut with neither rider gaining any ad vantage o n t he o ther as far as a serious chal lenge was co ncerned. A t the finish line it was Sh aw over Corbett. The 25 0 IT Main eve nt saw Ward Tweed (Bul ) spill o n t h e first lap coming o ut of tum th ree as Sahw lead the field at the end o f th e firs t lap. Although th e racing surface st ar t ed wi th a well prep ared comb ina ti o n o f wa te r and grad ing, high w inds soon dried out th e track , an d Corbett wh o is always a t hreat fo r th e lead, also sp illed almost o n th e iden tical sp o t where Tweed h ad fallen . Neit he r rid er was injured, b u t were eliminated fro m contention. CAL ., April 16 , 197 2 It was evident that a lot of h ard work we nt into course preparatio n prior to Satu rday and Sunday's Team Grand Prix 72 . Seldom do the hard workers get due credit for the many hours of effort involved in setting up a large motocross event. Hats off to Walt O'Dell and Jim Burgess for preparing what every rider that I talked with called " a fabulou s, birchen course." Using all of the famous Bay Mare Motocross track except th e tunnel jump area, the three-mile Grand Prix course ran hig h into the hills, th en came down th e ex pe rt hill before run ning back to . the rno tacross section. A team consisted of two riders, one Expe rt and Novice or two Novices. They bo th use d one bi ke and ha d to change rid er s a t leas t tw o times du ring the 75-m inute race . The p it area was se t up so ride rs could pull off th e co u rse to change rid ers, refuel , c tc., a t th eir op tio n. On S aturday "broth erly love" was th e th eme of th e d ay . The cons ist ent rid in g of S teve and Ti m Daviso n o n a Pento n gave them he hu ge first pl ace dual trophy award for th e IOOcc clas s. Winning a second with that previously mentioned brotherly love was the team of Robert and Roc ky Morrison also on a Penton, with brothers Ray and Sam Lo pez on a Bultaco taking a third. With the 250cc and Op en classes co mp e tin g, Su nd ay provided plen ty of excitemen t for everyone, Division B (250cc) produced a 175cc Puch for the win ner's circl e! Larry Burgess an d Danny Wade ro de co nsis te n tly fas t an d smooth with 75 cc less power than th e others in th is class to ca p tu re the large dual trophies. Cr aig Humber and Ken J ansen (CZ) were second with S teve Koh ler an d Mickey Alzola (Ric) h anging in there for third. During th is race a spectacular show for th e cro wd w as provid ed by Gary Lincoln o n hi s Oss a. Coming d own the Se ni o r Hill we watch ed Gary as he produced a huge clo ud of d ust. Lincoln st ayed on th e saddle whil e turning his bike comp le tely aro u nd , (3 6 0 degrees.) to con tin ue d own th e hill. The gre at es t esprit-de-co rps effort that this writer h as ever seen d uring a motocross eve nt h as been prevalen t for several Sunday s as well as du ring th is Team Pri x a t Bay Mare. Si mi Valley CZ sponsors a co vey of competitors. The owners, tw o great guys, Al T uc h and David Well s, are always availab le to spirit their CZ riders on. All th e Simi Val ley bikes are lined in a row under the shop flag b etw een m otos. The riders . all being very good, fin ishing in th e to p th ree m o st o f th e tim e , really ap preciate th e trem end ou s en th usias m sh own by their sp onsors. It was a great d ay fo r all riders.
