By Bill Spencer SAN J OS E, CA L., April 16,1 97 2 - Jim R ice ret u rn ed to t h e winning wa y s that have b ro ugh t h im fame and fortune at th e Santa Clara County fairgrounds over th e past three years . Rice rod e a n outstanding race, and with his return to Mik e Ackatiff- prepared bikes , he is on t he trail to victory. Leading off the fif teen lap mains was Dave Hansen by a to n with Terry Dorsch righ t o n his rear tire. Dorsch, th e Champion o f Champions winner here last Octobe r followed Mark Brelsford in th e heat and was catc h ing him fast at the end. In the main . however , it wall went awa y after eight lap s. and Terry finished well back. Bult ac o • Maico. O n the third lap , he low-sided going in to the first corner. Then just to p rove that he knew w hat he was d oing, he did it again two lap s later and decided to call it a day. Rice made his mo ve from fifth spot on th e fif th lap after getting by Brelsford w ho di dn't get off the line too well. From th at point Ric e made it look easy. as he usua lly d o cs when all is we ll. an d o n the next lap , he got by both Dorsch and Hansen. He then pro ceeded to open up a go od two second lead until he too k the checkered although Frank Gillespie was o n th e move on t he last few laps. With his Friday night Ascot win . Frank wa s re ally after R ice. but t he checkered fell a lit tle early . J im Crenshaw did the job in the ten lap Junior Main on his snortin' Norton after having to repass Tom White on the fourth lap. White got by on the third lap and was well on h is way when Crenshaw got underneath o n t he slippery blue groove. The two held together for the rest of t he laps. Wh it e tried his b est to get under t he Norton on each lap b ut had to settle fo r th e seco nd . The Novice fea t ure was a real free for all with Na tional Sc rambles Champion Jo hn Gennai rid ing h ard for the wi n on th e A & A Moto rs Ya maha twin and in the words of many, when he gets used to all that ho rsepower he will start setting some reco rd s of his ow n. R ick Ho cking, th e Fremo nt champ , o n his way to a good fin ish when on the second lap he dro p ped it with th e lead er and fro m that point it was all Gennai, by a to n. Super J oe showed up for an exhibition j ump of fifteen Toyotas and started h is commentary with so me disc ussion of Eve! Knieve! 's records. He tried to clear u p the m uddy records of . wh o d id w hat to wh o . For th e fifteen car jump, Su p er Joe was once aga in su pe r smooth .
