The new breed two-stroke honors were carried by Mike Cram on his new radi al-finned Maico. Mike and th e tw o stro ke p revailed , b ut not before h e was taugh t so me h ard lesso ns b y o ne o f th e best ever. In the first 500 Expert mo to, Mike had to come fro m behind. In fac t, he had to come from behind in all three to beat F eets, but in that first m or o , Mike tried to pass Chuck in the tight left hander en tering th e front st raight. He tried it on the inside; you can bet your last dollar he never tries it agai n wi th Baron Rules EI Toro Motocross By Lowell Stolze EL TORO , CA L., Ap ril 7, 19 72 - Bruce Baron. back on his Penton after a 125 Husky trial las t weekend, again carted off motocross wins Friday night at EI Taro Speed wa y in bo th the 125 an d 250 Intermediate/Expert classes. It was a Baron-Davey Carlson d uel in the 12 5's with Bruce winning t he first by 100 yards. Dave to o k t he second , aided b y a gr eat start, and Bruce t he third by 200 yards. Tony Duni (Pen) of Fallbrook wa s an ov erall third. T he 250 class saw some of the b est raci ng of the USM RC season as Baro n (Mai). Morris Malo ne (Aj S), an d Mar k T yer (Yam) put o n a thrilling show. Greg Smith (Ma i) captu red the first mota as Baron finished fo urth an d Mal o ne h ad . p roblems and was way back , but th e second heat was a dill y with Baron -ed gin g Mo rr is by a leng t h as th e lea d changed hands several ti mes. Tyer got a nice jump in race th ree and led un til the final lap. Here , Baron passed Mark with a crowd pleasing mov e on the jump in front of the stands and Malone followed him through to trail b y ten yards at the checkered flag. With the productive n igh t . Baron moved past Bruce McDougal in points. now holding a 530 to 490 lead. McDougal, present with a co llar on his injured neck, vowed to retu rn in a couple o f weeks to regain his lead. Brad Roberts (H on ) was back on the Schoolboy class scene and won division one over Brad Dutoit (Han). who too k the first two motos over Roberts. b u t stalled his bike in the third race while leading and posted a DNF. j eff Wilson (Han) bested David O ller (Hon) in di vision two as over twenty riders were o n hand. Bob McDougal (Yam) . yo ung er . brother of Bruce. continues to improve an d he won tw o of the heats in div ision one of the 100 juniors to edge Randy Rosencrans (Kaw). T he finale was a th rille r as the two riders went into it wi th a win eac h , the overall title up for gra bs an d Bob nipped Randy b y a couple feet. Mike Ricker (Yam) sw ept divisio n two, winning by large ma rgins in all three races. The 125 junio r class aga in went to Bill Zuehl (Ya m) , this time over Don Glenn (Yam) and Clay Southerland (Yam) . Zuehl wo n moto 's o ne and tw o and Clay to o k the final, aide d b y a gr eat start.
