GILLESPIE DAZZLES FANS TO ' WIN ASCO.T By David Swift GARDENA, CAL., April 14 , 1972 Fran k Gi llespie won h is first Main Event at Ascot to night. He also won t he Trophy Das h. Yes, it was a good nigh t fo r Frank Gillespie. Not wi thout a b it of fortune , m ind you. In an earlier h eat , Frank had a fit trying to get around Sammy Tanner as Sammy held on for h is 402nd AMA half-mile win. As they both thundered ou t of the las t tum, Frank p layed to win, unsuc ces sfully, b ut it was the width of a typewritter ribbon that separated th em. Frank was running a remote second in th e Trophy Dash when lead er Dave Aldana came o ff in th e second turn. Gill espie's style smoothed out a bit fo r th e remainder five-la p d ash , a nd a fte r h e . t o o k the ch ec k er ed flag h e d azzl ed the cro wd with a perfect wh ee lie th e le ngth of t h e grandstands. It was clear that Fran k was going to p ass him, though , a nd he did o n lap 3. Mark Williams cam e up from the rear and challe nged Moore for th ird but by then Ronnie h ad drifted into a position h e co uld ho ld. Tanner, who was certain ly o ne of the top contenders tonight, had to settle for a leisurely cruise aro und the oval after Shorty Seabourne collided with him earl y in the ra ce. T anner lost a foot peg - for the second week in a row, which is a record th at Roxy Rockwood has y et to verify - but poor Shorty was out of the race. T oo b ad. It was h is first feature start in nearl y a y ea r. The Junior p ro gram was upside d own. Las t week 's wi n ne r Al Baker set fast qual ifying time tonigh t but never got o u t o f th e semi . To top it o ff, Scott Brelsford , who seems to b e go ing slower this year than in 1971, wa s th e last to tran sfer to the Main. Then h e turned righ t aro u nd and won it .
