When we heard th at Don T ay lor wa s laboring deep
in the rece sses of Pasaden a engineering a
revolutionary water recepta cle that wo u ld not o nly
o ff er simpl e access (by wa y o f a scr ew top ) but would
also be small enough that a single man on a
motorcycle co u ld carry , we we re n aturall y skeptical.
Earl y p rototypes revealed several problems. Among
th e first was securing th e right material. Wood proved
to be an in exp ensive but cumbersome material and
coco nu t sh ell did not lend themselves readily to easy
p ock et sto rage. A comp ro m ise d ictated the use of
plastic for th e receptacle, o r " canteen " , as the french
call it.
The volume of the "canteen " was set at one quart
because th is size seemed to offer a d ecent su pply of
water while being relati vely comp act in size . Also,
Do n found he co uld purchase them by the truckload
from a j ap an ese manufacturer for pea nuts.
T ay lor quick ly found the ca nteen was cumb erso m e
to carr y despite it's small size. After experimenting
with helmet and axle moun ts , he dis covered the front

place b ut in order to o b tain a d rin k o ne had to either
unbolt the bracket or, if in a hurry, turn the bike
o ver. A latch was designed whi ch would rel ease a
port ion o f t he b rackets and furth er resear ch led to a
h inge t h at would allow this port ion to swing away,
leaving the can te en free to b e removed. The H20
aficiandos every where applauded the discovery and
the T&T Accessories Ligh tw eight Adjustab le Water
Canteen an d Holder for Motor cycles we nt into
full-scal e production!
Our test model, o ne o f th e first o ff the line,
revealed both superior design and dis ap po inting
quality co ntrol. The la tch, st ill fairly new in design,
d id n 't o perate as smoo th as we h ad hoped. It takes a
considerable a mo unt of intricate manipulatio n to
co mplete th e closing cycle. The h inge pin , clo sely
resemb ling clo thes hanger w ire, was not noticeable. "
The adjustab le slo tted h ol es on th e backing b rac ke ts
were slightly off-cen ter but in no way affected ove rall
p erformance . Finally, the screw ca p , attache d to th e
r eservio r with th e o p tio na l Cap Atrac her, was
mach ine d t o too close tolerances within the attache r
an d the cap wo uld no t rotate fre ely . (Inciden tl y , the
Cap Attach er will b e standard eq uipment b y th e time
you rea d th is.)
We were assured that all these problems were the
res ult of th e new emp lo y ees unfamiliarity with the
nature of the medium w ith wh ich they are
w 0 rking... they

engineers...a nd all difficulties h ave been elim ina ted , as
of this wrriting,
Drinking out of the canteen is easy eno ugh . It's
lightweight ( I lb . 3 oz.) allows it to b e turned upside
down, activating a gravitational phenomena which
empties the contents wherever yo u wish. Even with a
full reservoir, weight was still low at 3 lbs ., 4 oz.
Instructions for m o u nti ng th e unit on fro nt forks
are included but we didn't have the time to test them.
