To set the sce ne, it should be mentioned that it was held on basically the same track that the TT Scrambles and Speedway races are held. The track definitely seemed agreeable to Sam Lohr as he rode three really outstanding motos to capture the A Division of the 125 Novice class. It's unusual to see such fine riding in that class. Usually crossing up in the air is reserved for the Experts. Lonnie Murphy rode an outstanding third mo to to capture the 125 Jr/Ex. first under considerable pressu re. At th e end of t he second moto, t hree riders we re tied fo r first . perh aps p oin ting o ut a disad vantage of th e new scoring system, but after two seco nd pl ac es • Lo nnie got on the stick and coolly won the last one fo r the t rop hy. Miller LAS V EGAS, NE V., Ap ril 2 , 1972 Every th ing looked bad early in th e d ay , Bobby William s, th e motocros s promoter at the Las V egas Speedway, told everyone at the riders' meeting. It seems that even wi th the sp eedway owning two water true ks th at the ra ce track would be very d ry due to both of them deciding to break down on the same day. In fact, o ne o f th em was still parked on th e co urse. Williams th en offered to refund an y one's entry fee if th e rider d ecided it was to o dusty. Well, to mak e a little h appier endi ng to race day, we d id finally get wa te r o n the track. A nd to m ak e it even better, about th e sam e t im e th e water truck got back (o n e minute b efo re the first race was to b e started) that lo vely Las Vegas win d just up an d q uit for th e wh o le b itchen day. Ra cing today was highlighted several t imes b y the man y new riders bein g in th e winner 's circle fo r the first time, like Randy Dalton (Y am) in th e Min i-Enduro class. Randy had a go od race but was pressured b y Eli zondo (Hon) an d Gioeli (Steen 's). In th e 100 N o vice class , Stadtlander (Yam), after month s of almost do ing the trick, really put it togeth er win over ten other racers. In the Amateur and Expert ra ces, 125 Rickman rider Randy Cannon had to co me from b ad st arts each heat to win. In fact, in the last race he d id it twice, he mis took th e last lap flag for the ch eckered and slo we d down. He got passed b y two but th en turned it on to fin ish second and firs t overal l. Mar k Mason , olde r b ro ther o f Daryl, rode a Ossa to victory ov er F red Kimmel and G eo rge An th ill in the 250 Exp ert class, and afte r each h eat jumped back o n a Maico 50 I to d o b at tle w ith the Open Experts. Due to me chan ical difficulties he didn 't wi n but J ohn Harber d id kno w he was th ere. Harber is super fas t on his new 5 speed Hu sk y. T im All en had b ad starts so he wasted too much ti me p assing th e p ack to really b o ther J ohn. (R esults on Page 40)
