i CORONA IS A DOWNER FOR HART <0 C. « ~ w Z W ..J U >- U John Volkman's Sui had a rough day. By Buzz Baty CORONA, CAL., April 15, 19 72 Nobody could put back·to-back wins together today in the 125 or 500 Expert classes. Dick Eirstedt won all three of his motos in the 250 Expert class pushing his Maico home fi rst overall in front of the CZ's of Ray Topham and Mike Pera. Tim Hart rode the beautiful, and challenging, Corona mo t ocro ss course for the first time today. Tim won the firs t round goi ng away, his big radial finned Maico doing the job on Mike Cram's similar Maico and Chuck Minert's BSA . I was talking to Tim, just prior to the start of the second 500 Expert mo to . I asked hi m what he tho ught of the Coro na course. His reply was , he reall y tho ught it was great, the whole course, but in particular he liked the fast in field portion. So what does Tim Hart do but unload on the fastest part of t he in field. A fast left hand sweeper that has a one foot drop section . right in the middle of the sweeper. Hart did a mighty high side jobber and then the scooter used him for a land ing pad. I picked Tim's bike up and rolled it off the track as he hobbled away . Hart was suffering no broken anything, but the only thing that wasn't hurting was his helmet. After shaking everything to make sure all the pieces still worked, Tim said , "Well I guess that's my hard get.off for the week, I've had it, I'm going hom e." Mike Cram, who had been right on Hart's tail j ust seconds before, had mi ssed a shift , and it was lucky that he .. --, A split instant late r Ti m Hart cam~ off hard . aJI~1 [I Bower's Penton wasn't in anywhere as near bad shape as John Volkman's Bultaco though. John got off real hard on the first lap of the first 125 Expert mo to , He d idn't get to the hospital, but he did rid e back to his van in the ambulance. As with Hart, nothing broken on him, but his Bultaco's front end was a mess. Needless to say, both bike and rider were through for the day. Bruce Baron ended up win ning first overall, trying to ride a Pe nton that seemed to have nothing but neu trals. Bruce put three second place rides together for first overall. Larry Watkins on a DKW was second, and Bob Brooks o n a Ca rabella third. A couple of Juniors who may bear watching are Dave Bardley on a Husky in the 500 Junior class and Shawn Huffman in the 125 Junior class on a Yamaha. Both looked real good winning their resp ective classes. (Results on page 40) PROTEST POSTPONED DISTRIBU TO RS Accesso r ies, ShO P TOOIS MX . Cloth lng l scee iJ E QUiPment. If he had stayed as close as he was there was no way he could have missed hitting Hart. Mike went on to win the second moto . The third 500 saw Minert jump into a big lead as Cram got boxed in on th e start. Mike rode hard and was looking like he just might catch "Feets" when he went down at th e horseshoe loop up at the top of the h ill. Minert motored home on t he big four stroke, but because of an earlier poor finish had to settle for seco nd spot behind Cram for the seco nd week in a ro w. The 125 Experts a ll had problems of one ki n d or anot he r . Ch uck Bower won the first ro und, running easy the last two laps even th o ugh Bruce Baro n was closing fast. Chuck sa id the Pento n was n't h and lin g righ t. Examination in th e pits revealed a front hub that was cracked in at least three places, not to mention fatigue cracks around the down tube gussets. Sanders Sweeps 395 By J. By Imogene Rees ADELA!\'TO, CAL., April 9, 1972 Under the clear blue sky in the desert, the weather was hot and so was the action at Adelanto 395 Cycle Park. We had them both, guys and gals, in hot pursuit hoping to take home that valuable go ld. Bobby Sanders, showed his usual ta lent by taking first pl ac e in four different classes. Get you a mini, _ Bobby, and you can enter them all. He turned his back on the big troph ies and broke the bank by taking home all that fo lding green stuff. It's strange, but these guys get greedy, if they win one they go tta have b o t h . Larry La mbert scooped u p both troph ies in th e 100 Novice class o n h is screaming Kawasaki. Gary Roderic k d id t he smae in both 12 5 Novice races. Not to be ou tdone, Jack Smith grabbed 'e m both in the 250 Novice on his trusty Bul. The H ero award and a ride in the white wagon went to Nate Ezell for his spectacular crash in the 250 TT. The trophy was quietly tucked in his sleeping bag so he doesn't lind it un til the bru ises heal. When he checks his back he'll find the tire tracks of Ed Mitchell who flew over him. Finisher key chains were given to all finishers of the main events. Next Saturday night, April 15, starts the night racing season with the HRA Half-Mile event. Signup time 5 :30 pm to 7.
